Hello, I am new to the group, I am feeling very anxious about starting chemotherapy next month, I really don’t know what to expect. Does anyone have any advice please?
Hi Mejella1
Welcome to the forum, I'm Daisy53 one of the Community Champions on this forum. I'm sorry to hear that you have been diagnosed with breast cancer and have to have chemo.
While I won't say chemo is easy it is doable. After you have your first chemo session they will either give you a prescription for medication to help counteract any possible side effects or give you the medication when you are finished your first session. Do take the medication if you feel you need it. You will also be given a number for the chemo ward if you need to ring them between cycles and an emergency out of hours number as well.
Drink plenty of fluids during and between chemo cycles as it can help with side effects. Try to get out for a walk everyday even if only for a short one as that can also help. When I was having treatment I got out for a walk most days and I felt it helped me as I didn't get many side effects. Rest when you need to. If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to ask them and there is usually someone around to answer them.
Wishing you the best of luck with chemo.
Best wishes

Hi
i started chemo in December and just had my 3rd infusion. Symptoms obviously differ for different individuals and protocols.. I am currently having EC every 3 weeks for first 3m and then I switch to a different protocol. I have experienced side effects- headaches, digestive system issues unbalanced and the steroids stop me sleeping but overall it hadnt been too bad..I have managed to keep working (from home and probably about 70% of normal). Drink loads of water - I drink 2.5l a day, try and eat healthily but don’t obsess and I was told absolutely no alcohol. I exercise every day - walk, medium intensity spin on my home bike and occasional strength workout…but all while listening to my body so I don’t overdo. You will get through this!
Hi, this might help. I blogged throughout my treatment and this one is some things I wish I’d known before chemo. Best wishes
Thank you so much, Irishgirl16!
I've just read through this blog post and as I'll be facing chemo in the coming months, I found it extremely useful.
