Reconstruction

Help . I was diagnosed with stage 2 estrogen positive her 2 negative invasive ducal carcinoma in November.  The mammogram only showed 1 lump measuring around 4.5 cm . I've since had an mri and the lump has grown to 5.1cm and shown that there is a second lump around 2cm . I now need a mastectomy rather than a lumpectomy.  They have told me that my nipple cannot be saved. I will need radiotherapy and chemotherapy.  I need to decide what type of reconstruction I would like . I'm thinking mastectomy with delayed reconstruction due to the fact my nipple cannot be saved. I would appreciate and advice

  • Be very careful that your team are all on board for how and when the delayed reconstruction will be booked. A recent thead was from a lady who was encouraged to delay reconstruction, and then was told that she now counted as "elective surgery" and would go to the back of the queue.

I'm having chemo first and then surgery. Not 100% what will be offered to be at the time, as it's flicked a couple of times between mast and lump ... but 100% the nip has to go. They haven't indicated that that would in any way impact when I can have the surgery? Is the delay for you to get used to the idea?

  • I've another appointment Tuesday to discuss what option and course of treatment is best . I have been for a ct scan as well today. I've already  been advised to ask how soon reconstruction would be . I'm confused how they would do a reconstruction straight away without my nipple. Doing a delayed reconstruction was just an option.

Thank you for you advice . I hope your treatment goes smoothly
