Recurrent invasive lobular breast cancer

Hello everyone

I'm new to Macmillan Forums and would like to introduce myself.

I am now 76 years old and my breast cancer journey started 26 years ago in 1999 when I was diagnosed with a grade 1 node negative ER positive tumour, removed by wide excision and 3 years of tamoxifen. In 2005 I was diagnosed with a recurrence, again removed by a wide excision followed by radiotherapy and endocrine therapy. In 2014 I was diagnosed with grade 1 multifocal lobular recurrence (3 tumours) again removed by wide excision and intraoperative radiotherapy plus exemestane. Sadly in October 2025 I was diagnosed with a recurrence of invasive lobular breast cancer when it broke through my breast at the nipple as a fungating (bleeding and malodourous) tumour.

Needless to say, I was shocked and angry that this lobular breast cancer hadn't shown on my previous mammograms, but as I have discovered, lobular breast cancer is rarely picked up on mammograms.

So now I have no choice of treatment - I have to have a mastectomy and I am terrified of the surgery.

I wonder, has anyone else been unfortunate enough to have 3 recurrences of invasive breast cancer I the same breast?

I really thought that after the recurrence in 2014 I could live the rest of my life without the worry of cancer returning.

  • Hello, I’m sorry to read this. If you Google ‘Dr Liz O Riordan’, who is a former breast surgeon, you should come across her websites, which document her treatment, and in particular the lobular part of her tumour. She has since had two recurrences, but this is in a much shorter time period than your experience. Since then, she has had various treatments, but recently stopped one of them due to side effects. Here is one of her links:
