I'd love to hear from others who have similar experiences to me.  I have had surgery and radiotherapy for oestrogen based breast cancer.  It's 6 months since I had surgery and 3 and a half months since radiotherapy.  I have a checkup in a couple of weeks. I went back to work, in a public library, beginning of September.  I've had to go on sick again as it has made my breast and underarm swollen.  I have other health issues; spondylosis, arthritis, lymphoedema, various big ops on legs and knees.  I am seeing a psychologist and doing the ACT programme with him, which is good. Within 5 months, my mother died after a long illness in which I was heavily involved in caring for her, my dad's dementia was so bad he has had to go into residential care, then I was diagnosed with cancer.

I am so exhausted.  I'm on Letrozole.  I know that it can affect muscle pain (I already have annoying osteoarthritis) and low mood.  But, I'm on Gabapentin and Duloxetine for neuropathy anyway, and they also serve as anti-depressants.  I feel as though I should apply for ill health retirement.  I can do this, but it feels sad that I am retiring from a job I mainly love. But, I know there are no real alternatives to be redeployed.  So, I want to leave, but worry about my pension being enough.  I've worked for my employer 35 years..

Apologies for the long intro.  Just had to get things off my chest.

  • As you've has a cancer diagnosis, your employer has to consider you as disabled, sorry but cant recall what Act this is under. . This means that they have to make reasonable adjustments to accommodate your condition.  I work for a local authority and under their policy-i am also entitled to 10 days per year disability leave.  This is to attend such things as therapies, counseling etc.

  • Hi kdramafan1

Welcome to the forum, I'm Daisy53 one of the Community Champions on this forum.  I'm sorry to hear that you have had breast cancer.  There is information on the Macmillan Website about stopping work because of Cancer.  Here's the link to that information: Thinking about stopping work because of cancer | Macmillan Cancer Support.  You can also contact the support line on 0808 808 0000 to talk to someone about finishing work because of cancer and they should be able to tell you what supports you are entitled to.

Wishing you the best of luck with everything.

    Best wishes
