Hello

I am post op after having lumpectomy and breast conserving surgery .. They successfully removed the tumour but found trace of cancer in one lymph node which was removed.  I am on a Tamoxifen plan plus 4 weekly injections for 10 years.  I will have to undergo radiotherapy but have now been told I would benefit from chemotherapy and was wondering if anyone else is currently in this same position and has decided to take the chemo

  • Hi. Did you have an oncotype DX test to ascertain the benefit of chemo?

I was in the same boat, had trace of cancer in one sentinel lymph node so they removed them all and they were all clear luckily. Think they thought it was borderline whether chemo was of any benefit so did the oncotype test which came back as 26. If over 25 in pre menopausal women it’s been shown to be of benefit so after lots of research on the drugs they were planning on giving me I took the chemo.

How are you feeling about it? I presume you are young/pre menopausal also?

  • Hi !

I am 4 weeks post surgery and waiting on an appointment with an Oncologist closer to where I live as my surgery was done private ..4 hours drive to where I live so my ongoing care will be done more local to me.  It was said I needed 3 weeks of radiotherapy now chemo has been suggested so I am assuming they will do the test you talked about first.. Can I ask, how long will you be on the chemo for and will you also get radiotherapy ?

  • Ah .. I just just read about the test.  I am assuming they did that on the tumour.. I think when I get my app they will tell me the score from it and weigh up if chemo is needed depending on that

  • I finished my chemo on 4th Aug. I had 12 sessions. Last Thursday I finished radiotherapy and had 15 sessions of that. I had mastectomy last year and lymph node removal earlier this year.

Yes they send the tumour off to America for testing.

  • You have really been through it.  How are you feeling now ? I am very lucky in that I was able to have breast conserving surgery.

  • I’m ok thank you. I’ve still got more treatments to go (medications, bone infusions) so it’s a long road really but grateful I have access to lots of preventative treatments.

That’s good you didn’t need the full mastectomy.
