Radiotherapy with a hematoma

Hi everyone, would just like to ask if anyone had to have their radiotherapy with a hematoma. I have a hematoma of 7x4cm and have my first appointment with the radiologist Thursday to tell me how many sessions I'll be having. I am just so worried that they will go a head with the RT whilst my breast is sore, can't believe I'm 4 weeks post op and still like this.

  • Hi  , I had a large haematoma post op - I wish I could remember how long it took to resolve. What I do know is that I didn’t start my 3 weeks of radiotherapy till 10 weeks after the op. I was worried that it seemed like a long gap (I’d originally been told 6 weeks after) but was glad in the end that I had more time to heal. I just can’t remember what the haematoma was like by that time but I think it had pretty much reabsorbed. Sorry I can’t remember more details! Do share your concerns with the radiologist. They will have seen all this before so I’m sure can advise you about whether it’s fine to go ahead. Also, in my case, I saw the oncologist to discuss rads 6 weeks after my op, then had a planning meeting with the radiology team 2 weeks later, then started rads 2 weeks after that. Nothing happened very quickly!
Will be thinking of you on Thursday, do let us know how it goes. Love and hugs, HFxx

  • Have a word with your BCN. if they don’t know the answer they’ll check for you or suggest who you should speak to.

  • Yes, I had a haematoma when I had my radiotherapy . It meant it took a little longer to position me a few times. However, as  says, your first appointment is usually a planning appointment so you will still have more time to heal. The radiology team should be able to tell you if there is a problem - they are very supportive. Good luck xx

  • Hi there, thank you for the replies. Had my RT appointment Thursday. Was told that I could have the radiotherapy with the hemotoma but I would have to decide now if I will have it drained or not. A week ago whilst I was in emergencies as my breast was painful I was told that the blood was quite dense and they weren't sure if they would be able to drain it or not so I have decided to leave it. On the 27th I have a tac and breathing lessons then I start on the 3rd September so that gives my  poor breast 24 days to get better. I'm 5 wks past op  (WLE plus sentinel removal)and my breast is  still swollen, covered in bruises and tender to touch, I really thought I would have been back to normal by now but I'm far from it. Armpit has been giving me lots of problems as well, feeling a bit sorry  for myself at the moment, so I might just have that cry Cry

  • Hi  , things are moving forwards…. Which is good but still scary and worrying. When you go for your CT scan and breathing practice (mine was left side too), share your concerns about the haematoma with the team. As  has said, they can adjust positioning for all sorts of variations.
Sending lots of healing vibes as well as love and hugs, HFxx
