I had breast cancer last year. Had a lumpectomy and sentinel lymph nodes removed. Completed chemo January this year, radiotherapy in April. Started zoledronic acid 3 weeks ago and on anastrozole for a few months now.

I noticed on my areola (the breast cancer side) that there is a brown spot like mole(?) which wasn't there before radiotherapy and seems to just pop up from nowhere in the last month or two. Just want to know whether it is a side effect or something else or nothing to worry about?

  • Hi Holly

    Well done for completing treatment!

I completed active treatment early this year also.

Since my diagnosis last year,  I don't hesitate to express any concerns about symptoms to my team. Naturally we are are more anxious about our health now and indeed we must be vigilant.

I'd advise you to get a medic to take a look, to put your mind at ease. You are never wasting their time, you are looking after yourself and they are doing their jobs.

    Sending all the hugs xox

  • Hi  , I’d definitely get it looked at just to check it out and to ‘log it’ as it wasn’t there before. I had a lot of scaly bits appear after radiotherapy - very odd - the doctor at the breast clinic wasn’t concerned but did say ‘well it clearly didn’t like the radiotherapy much, did it?’ ! The scaly bits gradually fell off over the following weeks. More recently I had a mark/ patch appear on the other breast at the edge of the areola. I had an annual follow up at the clinic so showed it to the consultant. He was pretty sure it was just a patch of something beginning with k…. Sorry bad memory! Arranged to see me again a couple of months later… then did a punch biopsy to check it out for sure. He was right, just a benign skin condition. The biopsy took most of it away and there’s no need for any further monitoring.
I’d say always get stuff checked - it’s likely nothing of concern but always better to know. Love and hugs, HFxx

  • Thank you so much for your words. I am making an appointment in the morning, I would have done yesterday but our pet passes away and I couldn't face anyone.

I will let you know what the outcome is or what the gp suggests.

  • Thank you so much for your kind words. It's just been a tough year for us. I've got another oncology appointment at some point and waiting for the gp surgery to get back to me so they can take a look at the areola. I may just ring the Mermaid Centre, Treliske to see if it's possible to see them or do I need a referral from my gp?

  • I was able to self refer to my breast clinic for 5 years post diagnosis. I would phone the breast nurses, leave a message with my number and they’d ring back, usually the following day. They’d then arrange for me to come in, sometimes I’d see a nurse first then a doctor if necessary. I did this a couple of times in between my annual follow ups and was never made to feel that I was fussing (though I felt it!). Once was for nipple discharge, which should always be checked out, and the other when I had a skin rash on the treated breast. I did also see my GP about the skin rash because I suspected I’d need antibiotics, and I did. Xxx
