Hi, just had my first chemotherapy treatment and choosing not to use the cold cap. I want to be prepared before any possible hair loss. Any recommendations for headscarves( not turban style) and wigs. I’d be very grateful thank you

  • Hi

I'm having my first chemotherapy session this week - EC.

I'm trying the cold cap but, as my hair is quite thin anyway, any loss is going to get noticeable...so we'll see how it goes.

I've bought quite a few soft jersey pre tied scarfs from Amazon for around the house, but wanted something not so noticeable if I have to go out - though I'll be avoiding anywhere busy anyway.

I wasn't very confident to buy a wig on-line, so I've ordered one from a local supplier. They have been really good. I had a one-to-one ohe consultation when they asked what I'd feel most comfortable with, measured my head, and i tried several styles on to see what felt best and which colour looked good on me.

The style I picked is pretty close to what I have normally. It had to be ordered from Germany, so I have an appointment next week to have it fitted and trimmed if needed.

The voucher from the hospital + the 20% reduction for VAT has covered most of the cost.

For me, this has been better, as I'm sure I would have ordered one online that didn't fit or suit me, but everyone has their own preferences.

Good luck with finding something that will make you feel as comfortable and confident as possible

    Take care

    Ash

  • Hi, I would recommend JB Extensions as they have affordable wigs in excellent condition. I went to a local wig shop and reluctantly purchased a wig I was 80% happy with (I was more unhappy with the fact I was needing to buy a wig and adjust mentally to the situation) and I used my nhs voucher to get £140 off (this is what my hospital is willing to contribute, others differ). I paid £270 for the remainder. I have to say since having it home my feelings towards this wig have only become more negative for a few reasons. Sadly the shop won’t take a refund or help me to cut/style it so I’m left well out of pocket. I tend to find a lot of people have negative experiences when using their nhs voucher, my advice would be to walk away and think about your consultation before going back to buy, unless you really are in love with it first time.

I was recommended to try JB extensions and the quality is so much better for a much reduced price! More lightweight on my head, doesn’t itch etc. I also bought a very cheap one from Shein as so many others have recommended to try it and to my surprise a £12 wig isn’t itchy or uncomfortable and will do for a quick pop to the shops or emergency spare xx

  • I got a wig from a website called Zee Elle, I’ve had lots of compliments on so would highly recommend. I panic bought it in readiness for hair loss and this past week I’ve started wearing it and love it.  It’s nice to have nice hair again.

  • I visited the Wonderful Wig Company in person as they're close to where I live.  They've been really good at helping me choose, care advice, fitting and tweaking the style.
