Lump found

hi all,

I’ve had a painful right breast for around 3 weeks and noticed this week when I did a breast examination a large lump (behind / below my nipple). I contacted my GP and she saw me same day. She examined me and could feel a 3-4cm lump. She immediately referred me on the 2 week cancer pathway so I already have an appointment booked for 2nd July.

She wrote on the notes cyst?? She said it was probably a cyst but needed to be checked.

As I’m sure we all do I’ve been googling since and don’t think it feels like cysts are described (round and smooth). It feels bumpy and irregular.

I’m now really worried about what might be found.

My last regular mammogram was only July 24 and nothing was found then. Could a tumour (benign or cancerous) grow that quickly?

I’m 56 and on hrt. I’ve seen that cysts are more common in 35-50 year olds but also woman on hrt.

has anyone else had a similar situation?

How did you keep calm before having the checkup?

I’m probably overthinking it all but can’t help it.

thanks

Mel

  • Hi Mel,

My lump was cancer. The anxiety and worry are horrendous when we don't know.

Once I had results and treatment plan I felt much better.

I do remember my BCN told me not to worry too much about time frames of waiting between treatments as cancer does not spread that fast. How fast i don't know.

The important thing to hang onto if it is cancer it's amazing the treatments available now. Once you start you move through the treatments quite quickly and are closely monitored.

Fingers crossed it is a cyst. Keep us updated and chat in the forums. Wishing you well xx

  • Hi  , and another warm welcome to the forum. It’s definitely a horrible stage, waiting for that clinic appointment. Wise words from  , just wanted to add a bit from my own experiences. First, try to remember that most breast lumps and bumps are not cancer. I’ve had a range of issues over the years, just one cancer diagnosis (so far, don’t like to tempt fate!).

A couple of referrals in my 20s and 30s didn’t even need further investigations. In my late 40s I had several weeks of tests but the lump eventually turned out to be a fibroadenoma (benign). In my early 50s had felt ‘lumpiness’ - ultrasound showed cysts, no action needed. Finally at 59 I felt ‘thickening’ (no pain) and at my clinic appointment had mammogram, ultrasound and biopsies. The doctor said very likely cancer and biopsy results confirmed this. I’ve had a couple of ‘concerns’ since but so far so good!
I think my main advice for the build up to your appointment is to keep busy, not always easy! And really stay away from Dr Google, so much there is out of date or just wrong. Keep posting here if any questions, and let us know how it goes at the clinic.
    Love and hugs, HFxx

  • Thankyou Missmolly,

I’m trying to convince myself it’s just a cyst but not doing a good job of it.
I watched my cousin’s brace battle with breast cancer for 10 years before we lost her and it terrifies me x

  • Thankyou Happyfeet1,

it sounds like you’ve been through the worry quite a few times.
I’m trying to remain optimistic but finding it hard.
hopefully it will be good news at my appointment. X

  • My thinking was & is you're better off knowing one way or the other.

My 2nd trip was a regular mammogram followed by yada, yada, yada.. (My 1st was a sore tongue.) Everyone is different but please go to all the appointments until you're discharged.

And DO NOT GOOGLE. You search any type of ache and it comes up with a million types of doom.

Most of us here are in the same boat so reach out. If we can't help there are proper medical people floating around to off load to as well.

Keep well everyone (and that's a order!) Love & hugs xxx

  • Thankyou JH70,

    wise words I’m sure x
