Hi everyone. I was recently diagnosed with Stage 2 Modular Breast Cancer. This was following an Ultrasound and biopsy. I had an MRI on Monday and was phoned by the hospital today saying that I needed another Ultrasound Ultrasound next Monday. Could someone please explain what an Utrasound shows up that an MRI can’t and visa versa. Appreciate any help understanding this x
Hello
An MRI is more detailed than an ultrasound but I know it isn't always the best at getting a full picture. Maybe the MRI showed something that wasn't on your original ultrasound and they want to double check. In my experience my clip wasn't in the right place so I had to have another ultrasound and a new clip inserted. X
Hi Sheelagh , I wonder if it’s worth posting this query on the Ask a nurse section on this site? I don’t know how to post a link to it but you’d then get a medical explanation. I’m not a medic but this is my understanding of mammograms and ultrasounds (the same may apply to MRIs): I think that mammograms give an overall ‘picture’, then an ultrasound can ‘home in’ on anything highlighted by the mammogram. So the ultrasound looks at a very specific area rather than the whole breast or other body area. But please don’t take this as gospel! So I wonder if that’s what is happening with you, with the ultrasound following the MRI. I also know from posts here that MRIs can throw up all sorts of things that need to be looked at more closely to be sure what they are, but frequently turn out to be nothing of concern. It’s a horrible stage you are at, waiting for tests and results before getting started with your treatment. Love and hugs, HFxx
Hey!
Did you get any markers put in when you had your first ultrasound? At my first appointment they put a marker in to the lump so they can find in in the future but after my other scans had to go back so they could put markers around the border of the lump so they could track the shrinkage or growth throughout treatment too. Hope this helps
Thank you for your lovely reply. What you’ve said actually makes sense. Hopefully after Monday I can start on the path of treatment. Surgery first they’ve told me. I haven’t cried yet but I’m sure it will come. Somehow I’ve taken on the role of being the comforter . Hope you are ok x
