Pain and discomfort over a year later

I had lumpectomies in both breasts plus removal of lymph glands on one side over a year ago. Following that I had radiotherapy.

I still have tenderness and soreness throughout the area and numbness along the inside of the arm where the lymph glands were removed.
Is that normal? It’s not unbearable just that wasn’t expecting the discomfort to last so long.
  • Hi, I am sorry to share that I had surgery over 2 years ago and the area remains tender and I have numbness due to (I think) damage to the nerve endings.  For me it’s only when I poke at it, so not noticeable all the time, but I had to admit I hadn't expected this.  Best wishes

  • Irish girl, I’m sorry to hear that but it’s reassuring to know I’m not alone. I hope it eases for both of us soon.

  • Hi SEE,  I had lumpectomy, node removal, chemo and radiotherapy and still get occasional pain in breast.  This was 12 years ago, it does get better over time.  If in any doubt contact your breast care nurse.

  • Leelaloo, sorry to hear that but thanks for your response. At least I know I’m not alone.

  • Hiya, I agree with the others, my underarm is still numb, mostly pain free but occasionally I get nerve pain, etc. rubbish isn’t it? Xx

  • Anna

definitely rubbish but better than the alternative!

  • Hi, sorry you are still experiencing discomfort.  I was actually going to post myself yesterday to ask the same question.  I had four areas removed in my right breast and sentinel node removed under my right arm.  My under arm is numb and I get nerve pain in my right breast  and around the half nipple I have left.  It’s very distracting. Hugs x

  • I’m going to speak to the BCN. Meanwhile I think I’ll try thinking positive thoughts and eating cake.

  • Hi  , always best to get things checked out. Just thought I’d pop in to say that I had my op 6 and a half years ago, plus radiotherapy over 6 years ago, and the treated breast is still tender if prodded. Not just along the long scar where the surgeon accessed the lump and the sentinel nodes, but pretty much the whole breast. Mammograms are painful but I take paracetamol beforehand which helps. Seems like that’s my new normal! Love and hugs, HFxx
