Hi i was wondering if anyone has been told they are a carriet of the CHEK-2 gene and how this has effected treatment?
I was told this week that i am a carrier of this gene and that my risk level of getting further cancer is higher then others.
Im currently recieving psego and chemo every 3 weeks to which have cycle 3 next week but now getting shoulder and back pain which im worried about and its causing so much anxiety amd worry. See oncologist today have mentioned pain before but he wasnt that worried but i am. Im petrified its something bad. Now with a CHEK-2 GENE diagnosis im even more worried things arent going to get better. Im stage 3 invasive carcinoma triple posiitve and every day is a struggle and i dont know what havign this gene effects myself.
So any help or anyone else have this give advise to help me stop worrying will be extremely helpful thank you
Hi Montgard , sorry you are having these worries on top of your breast cancer diagnosis and treatments. I don’t have your particular gene mutation but I do have an ATM gene mutation, which carries a moderate risk of breast cancer and is apparently probably why I got it. It also puts me at higher risk of another breast cancer in the other breast. However in my case (there are different versions of ATM) it’s not high enough risk to warrant different treatment or preventative surgery. I didn’t get genetic testing till a few years after my diagnosis (long story) but I don’t think it would have changed anything.
I wonder if you could ask for a further appointment with the genetics team to discuss the implications more fully? I was really upset when I first got the news re the ATM mutation but was in time more reassured as it didn’t seem to raise my risk hugely. But each case is different and you need specific information about your gene and your case. I don’t recommend googling but I did find useful information from an organisation called FORCE. It’s USA based but lots of the info seems relevant to anywhere.
Sorry I can’t be more help, hopefully someone with the same gene mutation will come along. At least my reply will bump your thread up again. You could also ask your question on the BRCA positive section on this site - I joined it when I was waiting 3 months for my test results. Love and hugs, HFxx
