Has anyone had a diagnosis following mammogram that showed microcalcifications followed by biopsy which shows cancel cells nearby. No lumps. Waiting for hospital appointment now

  • Hi, I have just gone through it and it is not so bad. It sounds like you are very early on, so you are very lucky! There will be biopsies and the op is not too bad. Probably some radiotherapy as well. I am currently mid-radiotherapy, again not too bad, but had to stop work for a month as impossible to work with it. Stay positive and count yourself super lucky, at this stage curable. Being scared is normal. Good luck on your journey.

  • Thank you so much for replying. It us just good to speak to someone who gets it!  Was the op day surgery??

  • Hi, 14 years ago following a mammogram I was recalled.  Following a further mammogram and ultra sound I was diagnosed with calcification.  I was monitored for two years and they left me as is!  2 years ago I felt a thickening of the skin at the same area.  I went to my gp who referred me to the breast clinic.  I had a mammogram, ultra sound and biopsies taken.  I was able to tell the consultant that I had calcification 12 years previously.  The consultant said if the biopsies came back clear he would remove the area anyway as we may  be in trouble 10/12 years time.  I was diagnosed with breast cancer and had surgery to remove the 5 small tumours.  Margins were still not clear so I had further surgery.  I had 10 days of radiotherapy and now on Anastrozole for 5 years.  The reason I telling you this is, breast cancer treatment has vastly changed over the years and therefore the outcome.  Please do not panic or worry as it sounds as though this has been caught early.  Sending you best wishes.  Any questions please ask.  I’m so glad you have found this site.

  • Hi

I was recalled after a routine mammogram found an area of microcalcifications. During an enhanced mammogram and then an ultrasound, a tiny lump was also found close by which couldn't be felt. I then had a biopsy which confirmed the lump was cancerous.

A week later I had an appointment with the surgeon and a few weeks later surgery to remove the lump and microcalcifications.

Although not exactly the same as you, if you want to ask any questions just fire away!

  • Sounds very similar to me.  Thank you so much for replying. Was the op day surgery; did you need radiotherapy and, I hope, everything is now ok for you. Sorry, so many questions

  • Yes, the lumpectomy was day surgery. I had to arrive at about 7am and I was second on the surgeon's list so actually had surgery about midday and went home early evening.

As a tiny amount of cancer was found in one of the lymph nodes removed, I was offered chemotherapy which I took. This was then followed by radiotherapy.

My cancer was triple negative so the only follow up treatment I have is an infusion of Zometa, a zoledronic acid, every 6 months for 3-5 years.

Don't worry about asking questions, that's what these groups are for Slight smile

  • I had a biopsy last week which is when the cancer cells were found. Also had ultrasound at the same time, nothing found.  Not sure what triple negative means. I’m glad you’re doing ok. The waiting is awful but work will help keep me busy

  • Triple negative breast cancer is a less common form of breast cancer and means that it does not have the receptors for hormones and proteins that more common types of breast cancer have. This in turn means treatments such as hormonal therapy or HER2 targeted therapy are not suitable for me.

A combination of your biopsy results and surgery results will tell your consultant what type of breast cancer you have so that they can decide what follow-up treatment you will have.

  • Thanks for letting me know

  • Can I ask, if you've had a diagnosis from a breast assessment centre, i.e., enhanced mammogram; ultrasound and biopsy, do your normally have more tests at your first hospital appointment.
