I had a left sided mastectomy 14th Feb last year...

Is it normal to still have pain, numbness  and discomfort??

  • Hi LisaM, i have seen this question asked so many times. The answer that keeps coming up is yes. I still have numbness now and my mastectomy was 20 years ago. A lot of women have discomfort  and tightness and others on here have said it because of scar tissue. A friend of mine had it every time she moved her arm in a particular way. I do think its part and parcel of the surgery. I would say though if you are really concerned just ask your GP there is now harm in doing so.

  • Hi there,Thankyou for your reply, it certainly is the gift that keeps on giving, I foolishly thought once surgery, chemo etc was over I would be back to normal...how wrong was I, I suppose we have to just keep plodding on x

  • Hi LisaM, we have all been taken in by that one, i wouldnt worry to much x

  • Hi LisaM, I had the same as you last March and I'm still getting pain and numbness. I did my excercises but I get stabbing pains now and then and  the left side is extremely tight. I did mention this a while ago to the specialist and they said it was normal. Do you also have cording under your arm? I was told I had that and to excercise. All well and good but it's very uncomfortable and painful sometimes more than others. Now I'm on letrozole I also am getting aching arms and legs! Oh the joys! As you say the gift that keeps on giving! Sending hugs x

    • I'm on anastrozole and I get the joint pains too,do you get tingly fingers and stiffness in your hands?? Oncologist recons its neuropathy side effect of chemo but it only started when I started the anastrozole, I also have to have 4 weekly zolodex injections...oh the joys!! Keep smiling, sending hugs x
  • YesI get lots of tingling and stiffness in  hands. I have a metal plate in my wrist from a fracture that seems to hurt more now too! I got taken off of Chemo last July as it severely affected my lungs and i ended up in hospital, so i cabt imagine the neuropathy being a chemo side effect? I'm fortunate I don't have to have zoladex as I had a hysterectomy at 40 so been throughthe menopause. I am having twice yearly Zometa infusions for my bones though.  I'm also now on Abemaciclib which aren't great! Aren't we lucky to belong to this club! Xx
