Hi all, I’m after some thoughts please, I have been diagnosed with pre cancer cells and the consultant says they need to expand the area and give me radiotherapy or I can have a mastectomy and won’t need radiotherapy
I have had a benign lump years ago and a blocked milk duct removed about 6 yrs ago also benign
I have to decide in the next day or two and would like to hear your experiences please
I might be wrong but sounds like DCIS. I was diagnosed with DCIS after biopsy but mine was large and high grade (fast growing). The only option I had was mastectomy and SLNB plus radiotherapy. I was hoping to avoid radiotherapy but the post op biopsy showed some very small micro invasions so had the radiotherapy. ( I also had a benign lump removed ( blocked milk duct ) about 30 years ago without any problems. )
I would go with the option recommended - did he say one would be preferable to the other?
No he gave me details of both options and to tell him on Monday what I’ve decided, I think the fact that they already have to take more out to test is what worries me, I only had a mammogram 10 months earlier that was clear, I’m feeling mastectomy without reconstruction might be the best but I’ve heard from friends how much they hate the heavy fake boob and the bra rising up and they quite often needed radiation anyway so I’m just not sure
Thank you for your reply
Hi, I was in the same position as you. I asked my surgeon if there was more of a chance that the cancer would return if I didn’t go for a mastectomy. He said no the only risk was that I would need further surgery if my margins weren’t clear. I did need two surgeries as my margins weren’t clear. If you’re not comfortable with a fake boob I would go for surgery and hopefully the worst will be your margins aren’t clear and you need further surgery. It depends on the size of your breast how many surgeries they can do before mastectomy. Hope this helps you decide.
Thank you, that helps, I hope you’re clear now
Yes clear after two surgeries and two weeks of radiotherapy. It takes a good year to get back to some normality so be patient and you’ll get there xx
