Hi Everyone,

I was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer on 7th November 2023.   Have a lumpectomy, including lymph gland removal, booked for 22nd December (Friday before Christmas - ugh, oh well).  Magseed implant on 6th December.

I booked a weekend away with my friend over 1st and 2nd Dec on a coach trip, including a Christmas Market and stately home visit.  I am wondering whether I should wear a mask on the coach journey, or around the Christmas Market?

Do I need to wear a mask for everyday shopping trips to the supermarket or not?

I don't mind wearing one, just wondered what others think of it, at this stage?   I am trying not to catch a cold or anything like that before 22nd to jeopardise the op.

It's all very new and although I have a wonderful long term boyfriend, I feel very alone in this.

  • Hi, I think you're right to take care not to jeopardise your surgery, but agree it's difficult especially at this time of year although you still have a couple of weeks between your trip and the op.  If it were me, I might wear a mask on the coach, but if the markets are open air, then I probably wouldn't.  I think you have to do what is most comfortable for you and what makes you feel most secure.

As for feeling alone, that's pretty normal and is why this forum is so useful. I hope you find good support here.

    Best wishes

  • Hello,  Thank you very much for replying.  My friend and I booked this weekend getaway, back in May and she wouldn't go if I cancelled.   It will be a break for a little while to think about something else, wouldn't it?  I'll certainly consider wearing my mask on the coach and around the service stations.

  • Sorry to hear of your diagnosis but you seemed to be upbeat about it which can only bode well to be positive.

I think I would be inclined to wear the mask as you will be in crowds and the air circulation on the bus, best not to risk delay or cancellation.  At the moment I dont tend to wear a mask but thats because I live in a very quiet part of France and go shopping lunchtime when everyone is having lunch and shops are quiet.

Wishing you luck for your surgery in December and hope you have a great weekend with your girlfriend.

  • just wear it if it makes you feel safer, to hell with what others think. i wear one when shops are busy, if outside i woild worry less.

hope you can enjoy your trip, and welcome to the forum, sorry you are here hugs
