Hi I've just joined this group having been given my diagnosis yesterday. It's all happened really quickly thankfully. I went for my first mammogram since turning 50 in March a week later I was recalled back had a biopsy and confirmed yesterday I had stage 1 grade 2 and will have surgery in August yet to confirm if it will be a reconstruction or mastectomy. Its all quite raw the hardest part was telling my little boy aged 7 today. We didn't mention the c word just yet and on top of that my career was just about to take off. Any advice will be gratefully received. Thankfully my diagnosis has been confirmed to the breast area but believe I've had it for some time possibly 2 years

  • Hi, sorry to hear this, but good you have a treatment plan and a date for surgery. It's very difficult to know how to talk to children, but this article from Macmillan Telling Children About Cancer might help you.

In terms of your career, I urge you not to worry.  Myself and many other colleagues that I work with have successfully managed cancer treatment and come back to / gone on with successful careers. I'd suggest being open and honest with your line manager and engaging the support of HR. Best wishes

  • Hi Jolly13

Welcome to the forum and sorry to hear that you have been diagnosed with breast cancer.  It's good that you don't have to wait too long for surgery.  The best piece of advice I can give you is to take each day as it comes and continue to do the things that you love.

Best of luck with your surgery and whatever other treatment your medical team suggest.

    Best wishes
