Hi all,
I got the results of my surgery (mastectomy with DIEP reconstruction) yesterday and I was told the cancerous tumour which initially was thought to be about 15mm was almost 5cm and some of the margins were not clear. This hit me even harder than the initial diagnosis. Plus they found a 3mm cancerous growth in one of the 5 lymph nodes they removed during my surgery. The only good news is that instead grade 3 my cancer was grade 2. l'll find out what the treatment plan is on Thursday and most probably it will involve chemotherapy and another surgery to remove more lymph nodes from my armpit. Feeling pretty down and less positive than ever!!! Will greatly appreciated it if anyone has had similar experience and is willing to share it!
Thank you and take care! X
Hi, I didn’t have a mastectomy but I did have an area of 5cms removed. Like you I was totally gutted when I was told the margins weren’t clear and I needed further surgery. The margins were clear following further surgery which was the removal of a further 1 cm. I was very down and emotional however I parked up when the breast care nurse told me to look at it as another step in the process. Apparently this happens quite a lot!! Take it as another step in your journey. You will get there.
Thank you for your reply! I'm trying to stay positive and I know I'll have to pull myself together but it's not easy... x
Hi, I’m 10 months down the line…..it’s a rollercoaster of a journey. It’s not easy and I’m still not back to myself. Take a day at a time xx
Hi there, sorry this has happened to you - I understand how it feels when the pathology results are worse than you were expecting! I was thought to have a 3mm tumour, 5cm of DCIS & clear lymph nodes initially. After my surgery the tumour was 3cm & the dcis was 8cm & I had some in my lymph node too. I avoided a second surgery but had to have adjuvant chemo. I am one year on now and am getting back to normal - it is a long process but you will get there. Best wishes xx
Hi Lana65
Sorry to hear that your results weren't what you expected or wanted. I have to have further surgery as well as they discovered cancer in one of my lymph nodes which I wasn't expecting. I have a meeting with my surgeon on Thursday and should have a date for the surgery then. Hopefully you won't be waiting too long for your second surgery.
Best wishes
