Hello I'm new to this group.
I was diagnosed in January after having found a lump in my left breast, after having all the tests I was then told I had breast cancer DCIS. The consultant talked me through my options & eventually went back & decided on having reduction & uplift, I must also say I was & always have had a large bust. I had the op in April & got my results yesturday, which was bad news they didn't get all the cancer. I have been struggling with the size & shape of my breast mentally since my op, only to be told now I need to have a mastectomy. What I'm struggling with now is the consultant has told me they only have small implants, they only cater for petite women HOW CAN THIS BE RIGHT. It's not only petite women who get cancer through no fault of their own & to have 50% of their breasts taken away to then be told you need a mastectomy on just 1 breast & make it the same size as the other, which you are still struggling with mentally of the small size. Please can someone tell me if this is right that the NHS do this. I'm so sorry for rambling on but I need answers
Thanks in advance x
Hi AnneJulie
Really sorry you’re struggling and had bad news post surgery, I’m sure this is very tough news for you to hear. Have you spoken to the breast care nurse about how you are feeling? I found the BCNs were very supportive and they may be able to sign post some options for you. My experience of the Plastics team, both the surgeon and the nurse, was that they were keen to achieve an outcome for me that I was entirely happy with and resulted in mental/emotional contentment. They spoke of their concern with achieving symmetry and an aesthetic I was happy with, and would address any issues that may be caused by or remain beyond chemo/radiotherapy finishing. I hope you are able to get some reassurance. I would say it’s important that you engage with the breast care nurse in the first instance and let them know how you are feeling. I don’t know about the limitations of the size of implant which is available to you but I am sure they will want to help you resolve any problems you are having if it is at all possible. Be very frank about the state of your mental health.
good luck. x
