Hello I am new on this site. I was diagnosed with BC 13 years ago, I had a lumpectomy, radiotherapy and took Tamoxifen for 10 years - I had very little side effects apart from hot flushes and disturbed sleep.

after routine mammogram in March my cancer had returned in the same breast . I had a masectomy in April and recovering well.

My question is aromatase inhibitors I have been given letrozole and exemestane and had to stop both due to an allergic reaction. I an now waiting to start anastrozole, but worried that I will react to this too.

I can not have Tamoxifen again.

has anyone else experienced this ?

if I react to the last AI I wonder what else is available.

thanks for spending the time to read this

  • Hi

Sorry to hear that you've had your breast cancer return after so long, but good to hear that you're recovering well.

The only inhibitors I've heard of personally are all the ones you've mentioned, but if you do react to the anastrozole, it might be worth asking to be referred to an allergic reaction clinic to see if it's anything in the coatings that you are reacting to?  I only say this as a friend used to be allergic to an antibiotic and they carried out tests on her at a clinic (she had to be there for a whole day each time) as they prescribed each one to see how she reacted.  I do know from taking anastrozole that the coatings are significantly different and when I was prescribed a different brand once, the side effects from it were horrendous -  so perhaps there's a small possibility of an allergic reaction to what's in the coatings.

Fingers crossed though that you do ok on the anastrozole.

    Kindest wishes, Lesley

  • Hello, sorry to read that you have reacted to the AIs. I am taking Anastrazole. In answer to your question, well I’m not an oncologist, but I believe  that there is something called fulvestrant - which is given by injection. I think it’s usually used in specific circumstances, such as advanced breast cancer, so maybe it won’t be considered for you. Maybe a question for the MacMillan nurse helpline - they might  be able to advise. Xx

  • Thank you for you reply. what a great idea.  I will discuss this with my consultant, next appointment in 2 week.

    kind regards Gran21 x

  • Thank you for your reply Cloudier, it’s good to know. Hope you are doing well with Anastrazole.

    kind  regards xx

  • Hello,

I saw my oncologist today - as I have had an allergic reaction to 2 aromatise inhibitors they thought it unwise to try a third time. As my cancer was grade 1 and 9mm the predict score was2% benefit from taking medication so they are advising no medication, but will keep a close eye on me. I have been told to consider their advice

thought I would let you know as you so kindly replied to my post 8 weeks ago.

  • Hi, thank you for writing. I’m glad that you have had a good conversation with your oncologist, and that they gave you some information to consider. They must have discussed it carefully before seeing you. I hope that you are still recovering well from surgery, especially in this hot weather, which isn’t for me to be honest. I am now a member of the 6am allotment watering club!! Take care now, xx

  • Thank you, yes a lot to consider. No I’m not a fan of this hot weather.
I’m feeling better and stronger everyday, had my prosthetics the other day, they do make you warm Joy so in the house I’m lopsided Stuck out tongue winking eye but cooler.
Nice to know we are not alone in our bc club.

    take care xx

  • If you can’t take these could you speak to someone about natural aromatase inhibitors like citrus pectin? You could speak to a cancer naturopath or look on cancer active website. It might not be exactly the same but you will have something on board. X

  • Hello zephyr,

thank you for your reply. I will definitely look into this, and do some research.  Take care xx
