Hi all, I’m a 51 year old male, who has discovered a lump about a week ago, I have been to see my gp and he has ruled out a lipoma and a cyst and he’s referred me for and emergency appointment to the local breast clinic. I had a partial nephrectomy for kidney cancer in December and it was removed with good margins and put on the watch list for the next 5 years. I have to be honest and this has knocked me for six and this lump has made me more scared than the kidney cancer did.

  • I think not knowing is the worst for me a 52-year-old female. I know the statistics for breast cancer in women, and that it is one of the most treatable cancers for us, but the waiting for test results for the final decision on what type of treatment I require, I'm finding hard. I know I have one small cancerous mass but I have a much larger area where I'm having two different investigations to discover if they too are cancerous.

For you having been through your kidney treatment it must be scary to think of another lump, but this time in a different area, where men are much less likely to get cancer this may be making you anxious, I hope that you get an answer soon because the not knowing means our minds race.

The treatment I have had from the breast unit has been fantastic, I've had two initial biopsies, then I was meant to have another on Tuesday but lost consciousness and wet myself whilst clamped into the mammogram machine. I was then throwing up in the waiting area, so when I went back today to try it again, the staff the radiographers that treated me, 4 different ones, two nurses, the auxiliary staff, and even the receptionist were so kind to me and treated me with compassion. I lost consciousness again today (but not so badly), so rather than being seated they worked around me to do the biopsy lying down. So no matter what your worries I can't praise the staff that are trying to get a full diagnosis for me and are making that journey so much easier. No, they don't have as many men go through the procedures but you will be treated with utmost support and care.
