Newly diagnosed with secondary breast cancer

Hi,

I have just been diagnosed with secondary breast cancer after finding a lump in my armpit. I was given scans to see if they could find the primary and to see if there were any more secondaries. NO primary could be found. They think my immune system must have got rid of it. However, they are convinced it was breast cancer. I have several small nodules in each lung that look "suspicious". The consultant I saw said I hopefully would not need a biopsy of these as that would be unpleasant. He was a surgeon, but he has decided I don't need surgery and so is referring me to a colleague who will prescribe treatment. He says I will be on a drug to suppress oestrogen. As I reached the menopause many years ago I don't suppose I will be  producing much oestrogen anyway. He said I may be offered a course of mild chemotherapy.

I would love to hear from someone with a similar diagnosis. I am almost 68 years old.

  • Hello, I’m sorry to read this. I have a friend who has suspicious lung nodes, found by chance when she was on chemo for breast cancer. Things are still up in the air for her. But Ive replied about the hormone therapy, which I am taking for 10 years. Like you, I had been through the menopause. It’s possible you will be prescribed an aromatase inhibitor, like me. These target a different kind of oestrogen producing mechanism, not our ovaries. I’m sure this will be explained to you by your team. X

  • Hi. Thank you so much for explaining that it is possible that I will be prescribed an aromatase inhibitor. I've looked this up and I now understand a bit more. I do hope I get to see this second consultant soon, so I can get started on some treatment. How are you tolerating the aromatase inhibitor? Are you getting any horrible side effects? Are you going to have mild chemotherapy as well? I'm so glad they scanned me from my head to my pelvis, or they wouldn't have found the nodules in my lungs. Maybe the chemo your friend had will have treated the things in her lung - or maybe she will have to have something else. Slight smile

  • Hi, I was diagnosed in January 2021, and had 6 rounds of chemo soon after, 4 of which were Docetaxal. I wonder if you might be prescribed Paclitaxel, some people have this, but there are other chemotherapy treatments, I also had one that is known as EC. Then I opted for a mastectomy and had an axillary node clearance, then 15 rounds of radiotherapy. I started Anastrazole a few weeks after surgery, in the July. Yes, I tolerate them. I do get some aches and stiffness, but lots of people do. I hope you receive your treatment plan soon, many people feel a slight relief when that starts. X
