I'm just wondering if anyone else is starting Paclitaxel? The worst thing so far about being diagnosed, apart from the all the tests, is the waiting! Waiting for results, waiting for hospital appointments etc etc. Now I'm just waiting for the side effects and for my hair to fall out! Does anyone have experience of this chemo and let me know what to expect?
Fengirl2 Have a read of my profile.
I had 12 weekly doses of Pacitaxel which I finished on 6th April. I cold capped throughout which I also found very doable and slept through most of my chemo sessions due to the antihistamine they give you which made me sleepy. I’ve managed to keep a lot of my hair though it has thinned a little bit, though no one has really noticed but me.
If you will be on the weekly Paclitaxel, the other ladies I’ve come across on this have also tolerated it pretty well too.
I’ve just started my 10 days of radiotherapy yesterday, 8 more days to go over the next two weeks.
Good luck with your treatment x
Thanks for the info. I've decided not to have the cold cap as I can only wear a headband for a while before I get an headache so I thought I'd buy some nice head gear instead! Good luck with the radiotherapy. I've got to have a mastectomy after chemo and then radiotherapy. I'm looking forward to next year!!!
I was the same re headbands and have a history of migraine so I was dead set against the idea of the cold cap until the senior nurse said to me in the chemo ward when I went for my bloods the day before starting chemo you could give it a try the first time tomorrow and if you hate it we just take it off.
as I hadn’t planned anything I just cut the bottom of a leg off a very old pair of light weight soft T-shirt fabric tracksuit bottoms about 3 inches deep which was thinner and more gentle than a head band and I used that the whole way through.
I was totally unprepared, but I had a laugh about my scatter gun approach the next day.
In all honesty personally I was so glad I changed my mind and tried it because I managed fine with the cold cap and can honestly say for me personally it was a totally unexpected outcome. And a game changer as I’ve kept most of my hair and this has made a significant difference to how I’ve managed throughout.
All the best with your treatment and I would say don’t be nervous about trying the cold cap just once maybe, you might find like me it was totally doable, and if you hate it they can take it off for you too.
I took a couple of paracetamol 30 min before every time and that eased the initial coldish discomfort I felt for the first 10 min or so but even that wasn’t bad for me.
Good luck with your treatment. x
Hey,
I started Paclitaxel a few weeks ago having done three cycles of EC. I have been ok on both overall. I also cold capped and have kept my hair - first ten minutes are hard and then I find it doable - but if you are going to rock it out on fancy head gear then great!
I know what you mean about looking forward to next year! I’m ready for New Year’s Eve already!
Jan x
Thanks for letting me know. This is such a journey. First there's all the waiting for results and treatment to start and then there's the fear of the unknown. I'm so pleased I'm able to be so positive and I'm lucky I've got such a good support network - and my cat!
