Good morning, I was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and on Tuesday I had a right breast mastectomy with a tummy DIEP reconstruction. I was discharged from hospital on Friday and I’m struggling with the pain, sleeping and dizziness! Is this normal? I think I’m having a good day when I can stand a bit straighter but then when I go to bed and sleep in a more upright position I simply can’t move in the morning(like day one in hospital)
The swelling and tightness is so bad I feel any movement I will tear open my scar. I can’t look at my breast yet as I’m finding it extremely emotional. Any advice on here would be great. Thank you x
Hi Zojo,, I had the same procedure at the end of January this year. I stayed in hospital for 5 days. On the 4th day I was sitting out of my bed and walking a short distance in the ward. Yes, I felt dizzy but you've gone through a big operation. I couldn't sleep well and could only sleep on my back. It was difficult to move around once I was home but with help managed to do move around slowly. I couldn't look at myself for those first weeks. Move forward for me now. I'm recovering well and returning to phased work next week. Yes, I still feel numbness in my abdomen but all in all a good recovery for me. Just take things easy and slowly. You will get there in the end . I wish you allthe best in your recovery. Please reach out if you need some more support x
Hi, thank you so much for getting in touch with me. I only joined macmillan this morning so pleased I got a response!! Did you feel like you were going to tear your scars? My tummy is so tight and really painful. How long did it take for you to stand straight? Really wishing you all the luck on your phased return. Xx
Hi, I can't remember if I felt like that. My stomach did feel tight and I was walking like an old women for about two weeks. I had to really focus on walking as straight as I could. Honestly, it will get better. Just allow yourself the time to heal. Walk when you can and rest when you need to. My tummy still feels tight in the middle, almost like the feeling that you get after an injection at the dentist. My stomach has totally healed. I really made an effort to moisturise the cut. I found vasaline worked for me. Thank you for your kind words too. Please reach out again if you need too. You got this girl Xx
