Mastectomy query

Hi all,

I was diagnosed in feb with breast cancer in my left breast. Scans, biopsies and mammograms state it’s not in the other one and there’s no other cancer in the body.

Im due to have a single mastectomy with immediate reconstructive surgery and I’m seeing the plastic surgeon this week.

Has anyone needed a single mastectomy but asked for / been given a double mastectomy?

Im very worried and anxious that after surgery my boobs will not look / feel the same. I’m very aware this may make it sound like a cosmetic procedure rather than medical but feel I need to ask

Thanks x

  • I had single mastectomy in February for triple negative in left breast, right breast clear. I asked consultant surgeon if I could have double mastectomy as I didn't think I could cope mentally with one breast. I was told no, they dont like taking healthy tissue and a double was a serious operation and that I would be very ill if I did have a double. He said if I felt the same further down the line then I could be referred for assessment (psych assessment) to see if I could have the other breast removed.

I don't know if this is common with all hospitals. I am in Wales.

I don't intend to have reconstruction (at age 75 I'm not bothered) but not looking forward to having a prosthesis. If I was small breasted it would be an easy decision to not bother but as I'm fairly well blessed (E cup) I can't go without something.

  • Hi there,

I had a single mastectomy and asked about having a double for symmetry purposes. My surgeon was reluctant as he didn’t want to delay treatment on my affected side. He has agreed to do the other side when I have finished treatment, however I know that they are cutting “healthy tissue” and have to apply for these surgeries to happen through the NHS and to meet the ethical guidelines. I know that age is a factor in this too. The brain is a very amazing thing and I can tell you now I’m a slim but big busted 22 year old and even with one boob I feel okay! I actually cannot imagine having 2 now, I do not feel lop sided or anything like that - took a few weeks to get use to but I’m am shocked at how little that actually mattered to me. The prosthetic they give you is also weighted and feels as close to a boob as it can do! It’s definitely something worth discussing with your surgeon and obviously having it done at the same time will save you having more surgeries than necessary!

  • I am with my surgeon on Wednesday and plan to ask about a double.

  • I wish you all the best :)
