ER and HER2 positive grease cancer diagnosis

Hi, 4 weeks ago I fell over in the garden and was admitted to hospital with 2 fractured ribs. While I was there they discovered a lump in my breast. I had a biopsy which came back positive for breast cancer. At the initial meeting for the results of the biopsy , I was told that 1had a stage 3  - 3cm tumour and would require surgery. 2 weeks later I had another appointment for a marker to be inserted; but the day after that I had a call from the Consultant to advise me that the HER2 test had come back and I had ER and HER2 positive and would needs chemo before surgery. Next Tues (28th) I have an appointment with Oncology to discuss neoadjuvent chemotherapy.

I have had a cardio scan and was told that it was to check my heart as I would be on herceptin, I've also been to the dentist and had a tooth extracted and a n appointment with the hygienist.  I've read all I can about the possible treatment,  and watched NHS YouTube videos, but I'm so stressed that I'm wishing the days away until my appointment. I telephoned the cancer centre to ask how long after the initial appointment would my treatment start and was told I would have several appointments (including a pre chemo appointment A) before my treatment will start (probably within 2 weeks).

What other appointments might I have to look forward to and is it formal to have such a delay?

  • Hi LyndaB52

Welcome to the forum and sorry to hear that you have been diagnosed with breast cancer.  Your medical team may also send you for  CT and bone scans to check for spread. They will also weigh you to give you the corrected amount of chemo for your weight and will probably do a blood test as well.  The reason that they do all these tests is to give you the best possible treatment for your cancer, so it's normal to have a bit of a delay in between being diagnosed with cancer and starting treatment.  As a general rule breast cancer isn't fast growing.

Wishing you the best of with your treatment when it starts.

    Best wishes

  • Hi Daisy53, thank you so much for responding; just knowing what scans etc I might be sent for, and why is so helpful. I am sure that once I have my appointment on Tuesdays, I will feel more settled.

  • You normally have 2 appointments with oncology before you start treatment, one at which they will take you through their recommendations and one where they gather your consent. As well as the things @Daisy53 has mentioned, you will have an ECG if you are having anthracycline chemo (eg epirubicin) and you will probably have an appointment to have a line fitted (PICC or portacath) to make it easier to administer the chemo. My chemo started 2 weeks after the first appointment, I had a portacath fitted the day before chemo started.

  • Good morning Coddfish, Thank you for replying. I had the ECG on  23rd, which went well and I was told that I would be having Herceptin and would need ECG every 3 months. I most probably had unrealistic expectations of when treatment would start (I thought I would have the meeting with the Oncologist on 28th and start treatment within days(. I now realise that I need more scans (which just adds to the fear that it may have spread), I hope your chemo is going well; just one question - did you feel relieved once your treatment actually started?
