Hello everyone im new to the group. I was diagnosed on 7th feb, was told id need a lumpectomy followed by radiotherapy. I had the lumpectomy and lymph node removed 2 weeks ago. I went for the results of the operation yesterday and have now been told due to the cancer being analysed theyve sent it off to America for something called oncotype dx testing so they'll know then if i need chemo now as well. Im really worried now as its making me think the cancer was worse than initially thought. Thankyou to anyone whos read my ramblings.

  • Hi there, I am in exactly the same situation, awaiting results from the oncotype dx test.  My understanding is that I am borderline due to size of tumour when they removed it plus additional precancerous cells.  I also had 4 mm precancerous cells in one lymph node and the cancer is grade 3, ie very active.  The test will establish if the risk of my type of cancer recurring so they can decide if the benefits of chemo outweigh the drawbacks, ie side effects and delay to radiotherapy.  I was sandbagged by the consultant at my appointment where I thought I was being signed over for radiotherapy by the news that this test was needed, then misinformed as they state results are very quick and around 10 - 14 days, however I have now been told realistically it will be a minimum of 3 weeks.  More waiting and worrying without a clear pathway can mess with your mental health so I understand your feelings completely.  I am trying to put it out of my mind and concentrate on getting fitter and healthier to withstand whatever comes next.  I have also reached out for counseling with Macmillan.  Hope it helps to know you are not alone!

  • Thankyou so much it does help to not feel so alone although i would rather no-one be going through any of it. Like you say its better to try concentrate on other things. Im hoping as they booked me an appointment to discuss my results on 31st that I'll actually get them. It sounds like what you're going through is more or less the same as me in that mine is also grade 3 and borderline due to size. I really hope we get the outcome we can handle xx

  • Hi Hun sorry you find yourself here. The oncotype DX testing is the normal protocol for early stage breast cancer. It's recommended by NICE which is the National institute care excellence. It's to see how the genes of the cancer are working and if chemotherapy would help prevent its return. It's scored from 0-100 if above 25 it's recommended to have chemotherapy.

    • So it's not necessarily that your cancer is worse than you thought. Hope this helps. Xx
  • Hi

Is this test done on all cancers, I was TN so had chemo before surgery. I got clear margins and everything removed was dead tissue but my surgeon said I was classed as very low for reoccurrence, just not sure how she came to thus conclusion.

  • Hi Hun from what I know it's now a standard test that is done with all breast cancer. It's to show how the gene in your particular cancer works. They can tell by this if reaccurance is likely. It doesn't matter if everything else comes bk ok this is now the process they used to make sure you get the right treatment for your particular cancer. Xxx

  • Hi Jo5

I was diagnosed last year grade 2, 3 lumps removed  largest 47mm and 1 lymph node removed not spread  thankfully and oestrogen positive. Treatment was radiotherapy and Anastrazole tablets for 5 yrs. I'd never heard of the Oncotype test until they asked if I wanted it and thought best to know everything. Luckily mine was 13 so no chemo and it was as they'd thought. 1st yr mammogramndone and all clear.

  • Hi Jo5

I was diagnosed 12th January last year with grade 2 cancer, HER negative ER+.  They thought there were 2 lumps but found 3, all removed and clear margins the largest was 47mm they also removed 1 lymph node which was clear.  From the outset they said treatment would be radiotherapy and then an AI (aromatase inhibitor) tablet for 5 yrs.  I'd never heard of the Oncotype test until they had all my results back and asked if I wanted it and thought why not, best to know everything, but like you I did think the worst but it seems to be the norm for certain cancers.  Luckily my result was 13 so no chemo required.  So what they predicted for me was correct, I’ve had my 1st yr mammogram done and all clear.   The waiting is the hardest with Oncotype as it goes to the US.  I hope you get your results soon and they are all good.  All the best.

  • I was diagnosed on the 15th Feb and had my lumpectomy and sentinel node removal on the 8th March. I won’t find out results until the 30th. The wait it so hard. I also am oestrogen and progesterone positive and Her2 negative

  • Just had results through, scored 42 on the oncotype dx test which means high chance of cancer recurrence. Awaiting appointment with oncologist within next 3 weeks to sort out 5/6 months chemotherapy, a months recovery time, then radiotherapy and hormone therapy, annual physical examination plus mammogram for 5 years of monitoring. Oh boy, one day at a time.

  • Hi Hun. You said it.one day at a time. Step by step. Good luck x
