Had lumpectomy and lymph node removal in October and first chemo 20December. Second cycle yesterday. Hair loss is becoming real! Not sure how I feel about it. Undecided about wig and how to go about finding out about options.

  • Hi Potto

Welcome to the forum and sorry to hear that you were diagnosed with breast cancer.  When my hair started falling out after my second cycle of chemo I got my mother to shave my head.  I decided against a wig and brought a couple of turbans to wear when I was out and about. I bought mind off the internet.  Amazon is a good place to look for headwear.

    Hope this helps.

Best of luck with the rest of your treatment.

    Best wishes

  • Thanks for the advice. I've got some chemo beanies but they're really thin so possibly not the best for going out. Will check out the internet and hopefully find something I like. (Not really a hat person)Smile

I went with the no hair look.  I found that random people were much nicer, and would give some encouragement, which was helpful.  On the other hand, some would come up to me and want to talk diagnosis, or give me unsolicited advice.

A wig or something of that nature does allow for some privacy, though.  And can try a new style!

  • It’s a difficult one as people react differently. I embraced mine and made an appointment at a funky barbers who shaved it to grade 3 and etched in flower pattern to cover patchiness. I was able to get away with that for about month before shaving completely. you can get a NHS voucher towards a wig. Mine came with a list of wig shops in areas who except them. You make an appointment and they will go through ins and outs and different styles to try on etc. the shop I visited also offered to shave my head for me. I have only worn this one maybe 3 times. Got a couple of fun cheap ones from Amazon again not used them yet. I prefer my headscarves which you don’t have to spend a fortune buying. I visited charity shops and bought bundles of scarves off vinted app. I’ve ended up with prob 15-20 scarves for the price of 3-4 in shops brand new. Plenty of YouTube videos demonstrating different ways/ styles to tie in. Also look at Look good feel better website. As well as online tutorials they also run free classes on headwear, makeup and skincare. When my journey has finished I will be donating wigs and scarves to maggies centre at hosp I received treatment.
