Hi, I am new to group and wondered how long pain, numbness and hard lump remain after having lymph nodes removed please?

  • I have the same a therapeutic mammoplastomy three weeks ago and sentinel nodes removed from both sides - the right is still very sore, it felt like it was chaffing so I put sudocrem under my arm, that helped xx

  • Hi Fullofquestions,

I had lumpectomy plus sentinel lymph node removal yesterday afternoon. Very early days for me, but in quite a bit of pain and not sleeping too well, the reason I’m on here at 3am in the morning. Plus I’m still tearful and trying to get my head around it all. I was only diagnosed 5 weeks ago.

I guess everyone is different, but having read online stuff and people’s posts on here, it can take some weeks even months to feel somewhat pain free. You can get advice from your BC nurse or GP and there are lots of people on here in similar positions that also have good advice. Good luck x

Hi Valleyside. Sorry to hear you are not sleeping and in alot of pain. That does subside fairly quickly. Not sleeping just enhances any emotions too so I understand how you feel. Mine was over a month ago and very little discomfort now and for past couple of weeks. I was worried the numbness and strange feeling would stay that way but it's almost back to normal. I hope that you improve soon and are able to get some sleep. Hugs and thoughts xx

  • Thank you Pray for your reply. I have some stronger painkillers now, hopefully I will get a better sleep tonight xx

  • I had a similar op and was given a small heart shaped cushion in hospital made by a previous patient.  This, tucked under my arm was very comforting and I used it for some time at home day and night until I could manage without it.  If you have something soft you could use it may help.

  • Hi.
im 18 months on since full LNC and it’s taken this long to settle down. I’m still numb at the back of my armpit and still have scar tissue in arm pit. However it’s a lot better than it was. I have full movement. Only annoying thing is an itch that when u scratch you can’t feel it. Very frustrating. Xx

  • Very well put. I’m only post diagnosis and I want my old life back. Part of me knows it will never be the same and with the fear I have it’s devastating . My heart is broken

  • Hi Redcar,

I know exactly how you feel. It’s the worse feeling in the world. October 6th I went for my routine mammogram, October 9th my only daughter got married, an amazing day. October 18th the letter arrives asking me to ring the Luton and Dunstable breast unit. October 21st I’m at that unit having a further mammogram, ultrasound and two biopsies. October 26th the phone call came from the unit ‘ Sorry, but you have cancer’
I cried for days and days, why me? What have I done? Everyday since is just a blur, a feeling of dread and what if’s. My lumpectomy and sentinel lymph node removal was on the 1st December. What if it’s spread? Am I going to get through this? What further treatment lies ahead?

I know that there are millions of women going through this and I’m definitely not alone. I just know that life is never going to be the same and I’m grieving for the life I had, it’s a huge loss.

So what your feeling must be normal, please God we will both get through this and come out the other side stronger women. Hopefully Pray you have family and friends by your side and a good medical network to help you through this.

Take care and best wishes for your recovery, Mary xx
