Seroma and lymphodaema 2 years post mastectomy

I have had breast cancer twice. Once in 2012. I had a lumpectomy followed by a mastectomy and then a Diep flap reconstruction 18 months later.

In 2020 I was diagnosed with a different primary breast cancer on the other side with 8/11 affected lymph nodes. I developed a  seroma which was drained a couple of times before radiotherapy.  Radiotherapy was completed 18 months ago but I have developed lymphodaema  about 12 months ago and have a hard and painful seroma that projects under my arm pit. I feel I have been fobbed off by the consultant telling me I am unlikely to  be offered a reconstruction if I  have the seroma drained. It is unlikely that I will actually have a reconstruction because I  cannot have a second Diep flap reconstruction  and anything else would be very asymmetrical. My feelings are that I  would like the first reconstruction removed.  However, before I  can move forward  I  really want my current pain and discomfort to be addressed. Has anyone else had anything similar?

  • Hi NessMol

Welcome to the forum and sorry to hear that you had breast cancer and that you have developed lymphodaema and have a seroma under your arm pit that is hard and painful.  While I haven't had anything similar I thought I'd reply to you as I noticed that you haven't had any replies yet.  Hopefully someone will be along shortly with the experience you are looking for.

    Best wishes
