Hi got diagnosed with stage 2 her2 positive in left breast had lumpectomy and lymph node removed lymph node clear

Have to now have second op as the margins were out

Also offered the genetic test to determine whether I need chemotherapy

I will have to do radiation treatment but was told that I would do 1 week of radiation which usually is done over 3 weeks

Has anyone had the one week radiation treatment and how do you feel are there any side effects

Also have to go on hormone therapy

  • I had 5 days of whle breast radiotherapy and then 5 days booster to the area as it was near my chest lymph nodes and they can't remove those.

i had chemo first so found radiotherapy easy. I was already feeling tired from chemo recovery so I didn't notice much difference. I think the fact you're travelling less as well as it is a shorter timeframe helps.

I found I was a bit red and sore and my arms got stiffer again so I had to double down on the exercises. My breast also hardened up upa bit. It can take a good 6 months for things to settle after radiotherapy.

I used Aveeno moisturiser throughout and for a couple of months afterwards. Radiotherapy peaks at 2 weeks following treatment and your cells recovery by about 6 weeks. Most people feel tired by it as you heal

  • I had 5 days of radiotherapy; it was fine.  I was a little tired, but no skin breakdown.  I used Aveeno moisturiser too.

    Best wishes

  • Just finished my fifth day of s 5 day radiotherapy course today. Did Thurs, Fri, then Mon, Tues, Wed. Only side effect so far is the odd twinge in my breast (left like yours.) Apparently the tiredness, if it comes, is in 2 weeks time along with any skin reaction. They explained it really nicely that the tiredness might just be the need to sit down at 4pm for a rest, and skin reaction is more likely if you've bigger breasts because they chafe a bit more. Oh, and left breast is now slightly fuller. Radiotherapy was quick, literally just lying down and breathing in a few times. Have been given a tub of cream to rub in twice a day to try to protect against any skin reaction. The most tiresome thing was driving to/from the hospital, so really glad only had to do it 5 times. Good luck. I also had WLE and re-excision and 4 weeks of hormone tablets so far, so just a little bit ahead of you. Also went back running on first day of radiotherapy and ran again today - because there comes a point when you want to take back control! Will see how I feel in a couple of weeks.

  • Thankyou for replying

It doesn't sound too bad I just want to get back to some sort of normality

  • Thankyou xxxx I will buy some aveeno

  • I just hope I don't need chemo the radiotherapy doesn't sound too bad

  • It is quite a positive experience because although you can't feel anything during treatment, you need to remind yourself that it is doing the job of removing any stray cancer cells. Cancer Centre staff were particularly lovely as well. Hope you get the result you want re chemotherapy.
