second opinion during breast cancer diagnosis

Hi everyone, I hada recall from a routine mammogram, had 3 sets of core biopsies and a vacuum biopsy. Unfortunately the communication was not good so I asked if i could have a second opinion. This went through and i am now a patient at a different hospital, one that specialises in breast cancer. I am having further tests with them but the hosputal that I left has phoned me today to say that they too asked for a second opinion at a differrnt hospital and that a professor at that hospital informed them that I need only to be monitored for the next 5 years with no other intervention.

I am at a loss what to make of this. Are they saying that they asked for another second opinion because they think the hospital that I chose to attend is not good enough? Or is this normal practise? This is really affecting my mental health.

Help! Any ideas or views on this?

  • I think they were just clarifying their opinion at the original hospital. Sometimes doctors just have a different opinion on the best treatment. If you feel confident with your new hospital that specialises in breast cancer, which it sounds like you do, you should just listen to that one voice or you will end up in a muddle! I'd be doing whatever the new one tells me to do and ignore the phone call from the other.

  • Thank you, after talking to the helpline that is exactly what I have decided to do.
