Hi I was hoping for a bit of advice. I have had a lumpectomy but have now been told I have DCIS in situ and need a mastectomy. How do you decide what surgery to go for? Feel overwhelmed by options and also mixed messages about preserving the nipple as I understand it it still breast tissue and could have cancer cells. Any help much appreciated!

  • Sorry to see no one has replied to you, this should get you bumped back up to the top in the hope that you get relevant answers.  Love from aNN

  • I went through this on a piece of paper with my breast nurse.  I looked at each option available and pros and cons.  Then when I met the surgeon we talked it through.  The best outcome was determined on that chat and ut was 15 minutes I'll never forget.

I had left mastectomy even though they offered me lumpectomy. After surgery my surgeon said it was the right choice.  The nhs try to preserve first and foremost but I wanted the cancer out.   I pushed for reconstruction and they did a temporary one until radiotherapy is done.   He only agreed to that if there was enough clearance amd he decided that in the theatre.

    Hope this helps x

  • Hello- had a mastectomy and full node clearance. Worked for me ! X

  • Hi

I am 9 days post surgery. I was diagnosed with high grade dcis in my right breast towards the end of august this year measuring at 55mm (it was smaller on mammogram- this was post surgery measurements). My breast also had lots of areas of calcifications (over 20) in that breast. It was decided I needed a mastectomy on that side. Due to family history they also did a risk reducing mastectomy on the left breast at the same time- there was no disease in this breast. I have had both nipples removed also- I wasn’t really given the choice. I had had a change in the affected breasts nipple after all the imaging and the risk of leaving it wasn’t worth it. The main thing I was worried was how they would look. They don’t look awful tbh. A lot smaller than I am used to (from an f cup to a b is a big difference) although this will get bigger as I have expanders in. I have very little feeling over the breasts. Have healed well and basically they’re a bit like barbies boobs. Nice and smooth. I’ll be having nipple reconstruction/tattooing after I’ve had my permanent implants placed in 6 months time. If you’ve any questions feel free to ask. My histology is going to mdm today but everything is looking very positive that this is the end of my cancer treatment itself. At 37 this is not what I wanted but I’m relieved that I won’t need chemo/radio.

  • Thank you.  I am seeing the surgeon on the 5th to discuss what surgery but if you don't mind me asking questions that would be really kind x

  • Not a problem at all. X
