Diagnosed 1st September

It's been a bit of a mind blowing few weeks....

GP appointment to check a lump I found in my right breast

Referred to go for a ultrasound, which turned into a mammogram and biopsy (given the reason for the appointment, couldn't have asked for better treatment provided by the team)

Results came through on 1st September, and bosh it's cancer.

I'm considered quite young (having turned 38 2 weeks before diagnosis!) Which is lovely to hear from so many people haha.

I've been told I'll have a lumpectomy, as well as breast reduction and uplift (free boob job yay!) On the 20th, followed by radiotherapy and chemo.

I don't have cancer in the family, and it's all happening so quickly. Never had anything medical happen - so trying to stay positive and make the best out of it all. Did have to pause a promotion application as I don't want to let people down with time off work etc.

Recently split with my boyfriend of 8 years, all very amicable and we own a house together. I was starting the hunt for my own place, but had to put that on hold.

My parents live abroad, but they are making plans to fly over so they can look after me following my surgery (sometimes only Mum will do eh?)

Work have been understanding so far, only been there a few months but my manager signed my probation off yesterday so I'd at least get paid sick pay .

Any advice on what to do pre surgery would be appreciated. Never had any surgery, and whilst I try to put a brave stance on things - I'm friggin terrified.

  • Hi AmyC

Welcome to the forum and sorry to hear that you have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Try to keep yourself busy while you are waiting for surgery to help take your mind off it. On the day of the surgery be sure to bring something with you to read or to look at as you can be waiting around for a while before you go into surgery. Get out in the fresh air as much as you can as exercise is a great way to forget about your troubles even if only for a little while.

Best of luck with your surgery and with whatever further treatment you may need post op.

    Best wishes

  • Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. Do not fear the surgery - I hadn’t had anything done before this and I’m in my sixties, but I can tell you that the care I was given blew me away. Had mastectomy and chemo, like many on this forum. The medical teams were amazing.  So although just now you’re scared and worried- take one appointment at a time and don’t be afraid to tell the nurses anything you are worrying about - they’ll help. They have heard it all before.xx
