Just like to say Hi, I am 58 years young and will be married 33 years on the 26th August. 4 weeks ago after having my Mammogram and then two weeks later my Biopsy, yesterday at my consultation was told I have breast cancer and will be having surgery in about 4 weeks followed by radiotherapy and the hormonal tablet, this has knocked me sideways as it will with most people, never thought it would happen to me as no cancer within the family. Can't remember all that was said by the surgeon as when I was asked do you know what I am telling you and I said the words BREAST CANCER I froze and got quite upset, my husband was there so he took in most of the information, we had a one-one breast nurse who went over a few things giving me a lot of reading documents, still can't believe I have breast cancer, I am sure it will hit me soon, feeling very nervous and scared, trying to put it at the back of my head at the moment but don't think its working, got my pre ops today an just waiting for that date to come through.
Hi Skils89, It's a shock isn't it, but God Bless mammograms is all I can say! My BC was picked up in my lymph nodes in Nov last year on routine mammogram (1 year late due to Covid). No signs, no lump, no dimpling, nothing! And no breast cancer in my close family either. It's really weird, when you feel perfectly normal, healthy, energetic and, well, just NORMAL, and someone is telling you you have cancer, and need all this treatment? Really?? But the predictions are (I think) that 1 in 2 will have cancer in their lifetime, so that is pretty normal.
I drew up a list of all the friends, family and aquaintances I knew who had had breast cancer, and they were the first I told apart from close family. They regularly check up on me, give me the benefit of their experiences, and I know they understand. I even buddied up by telephone and text with a friend of a friend who had just been diagnosed with different breast cancer, and we helped each other through chemo, even though we'd only met briefly twice before! There's lots of good advice on here too from people who know.
You'll get through this 1 step at a time, and congratulations on your wedding anniversary! Time to celebrate those 33 years!!
Hi
The same thing happened to me at my routine mammogram and this time last year I was recovering from surgery and waiting to start my radiotherapy.I’ve just had my one year mammogram in June and it was all clear.
The first few weeks are a whirlwind of appointments and information but you will get through it even if it takes a while to sink in.
There is lots of information and support on this site and no question is too daft so don’t be afraid to ask.
take care x
