I had a lumpectomy done in April and was told that the tumour was very small (1.6). My consultant said they had got all of it and that I would have 15 sessions of radiotherapy.   My cancer nurse told me 9 weeks later that I would have 5 sessions and I didn't need to see an Oncologist.  Went to see an Advanced Clinical Practitioner who went through all the ins and outs of having radiotherapy or not.  After telling me that my tumour was tiny he gave me the impression that I didn't really need radiotherapy.  Normally when you see these people you expect to see the consent form virtually in front of you ready to be signed.  This wasn't the case and after an hours discussion he said he printed the consent form and although I signed it I said I would think about it over the weekend.  He said if I decided not to go ahead then he would just tear the form up.  I am on Leprozole.

I am 90% sure as to whether I am having radiotherapy or not but I am going to speak with the breast nurse or consultant if possible to get a clearer picture.

Has anyone been in the same situation and if so, would appreciate your reasons for having radiotherapy or not.

  • Hi Pearl. I also had a lumpectomy in April small in size (2cm). I have had to delay seeing oncologist because of having Covid. Hopefully its 3rd time lucky. I am waiting to find out how many sessions of radiotherapy I will have. Like you it could be anything from 5 to 15 sessions. I am unsure as to why I need radiotherapy because it was caught so early. I would choose not to have radiotherapy by choice but right since they found my lump at routine screening they have mentioned it. I will be interested to find out why.

  • Hi Devon, At the moment I am leaning more to not having radiotherapy because like yours mine was found early through routine screening in February. The clinical practitioner did say during the discussion that the Leprozole would protect throughout the whole body whereby radiotherapy will only protect around the breast.   I just feel so confused at the moment.  I will let you know what I decide. Hope you get to see the Oncologist soon.

  • Mine was er positive. I do know for sure I don't want the blocking medication. I went through menopause at 38 am now 59. I took HRT until I was 50. So dont want to go down that route again. Good luck with whatever decision you make. x

  • Hello Pearl; my tumour was a similar size to yours, and I had  5 sessions of radiotherapy.  I had no issues with the radiotherapy, apart from being a little ache-y afterwards.  I've been taking Anastrozole for nearly 10 weeks now, with little in the way of side effects... so far.

    Best wishes, whatever you decide.

  • Hi Devon,  I too went through the menopause at 36 I'm now 68.  I took HRT for about 10 years. I thought post menopause that we all went on a daily tablet with breast cancer, I didn't think we had a choice.  I'm into my 6th week on Letrozole and to be honest I think the night sweats and sleeplessness was more to do with the hot weather.  I haven't had a problem with sweats and sleeplessness since the the nights have cooled down.  The only side affect I've had is swelling of feet and ankles but again its much fresher today so don't seem quite as bad.

  • Thanks for your insight. Will see what oncologist says on Friday as long as I test negative again for covid on Wednesday. It may take a lot of persuading to get me to take whatever they want to give me.

  • Good luck on Friday, please let me know how you get on with oncologist.

  • I will. Thanks Pearl. x
