Hi. I'm new to the group, having finished my treatment in April. All the help and advice so far has been great. But I can't seem to find anything about my scalp problem.
My hair is now growing back, following chemotherapy, and is growing as tight curls. My scalp is very itchy and dry, despite smothering it in E45 cream. If I don't put cream on, within 24 hours my scalp goes crusty or scabby. This makes it even more itchy.
My hair is now getting quite thick, so I'm having trouble getting the cream onto my scalp. It's getting stuck on my hair and if I try to massage it in, my scalp gets really sore. It almost feels as if there are tiny cuts around the crown of my head.
I'm using E45 shampoo, and washing it daily. I have to because of the build up of cream.
Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, how did you manage it?
Thanks
Hello Alijk, welcome. I've got the chemo curls too although haven't had any real problems with my scalp although it was a bit dry for the first few months after chemo. I did find that just washing it once a week with very gentle shampoo such as Aveeno helped but your problem sounds really uncomfortable and painful so I'm wondering if it might be helpful to contact your nurse or the chemo hotline for advice if you haven't already as you might need to have something prescribed? Is it possible that it's the E45 that is causing the problem due to being sensitive/allergic to it? Sorry I can't help much but hope it gets sorted soon x
Hi Lalalou
Thanks for the reply. I was advised to try T-gel, as that is recommended after hair transplants. Or Head and Shoulders. Neither has worked. Only the E45 cream seems to settle it down.
I'm just having trouble getting the cream onto my scalp now, as my hair is getting quite thick. It's getting in the way!!!
I shouldn't complain. At least it IS growing back!!
It's just the soreness that's so troublesome. It's like rubbing it into an open wound.
I'll contact one of team and see what they suggest.
I just thought someone else may have had the same problem and found the 'perfect' solution.
Enjoy your curls x
Could you perhaps try an unscented sulphate free paraben free shampoo like the faith in nature one. Do you have a good brush like a tangle teezer? Am just trying to think about a change of product that might help you. Am not sure there is a perfect solution other than trial and error. Maybe the E45 is too much for the scalp and the daily washing is agitating it, which is why I am wondering about the faith in nature product. Or try one from tropics - again very mild and non-irritant, but pricey though x
Hi
I have a type of dermatitis and have had prescription shampoo in the past - you should really go and see your GP and ask to be referred to a dermatologist , I have always been told to steer clear of E45 as it is a barrier and can clog the pores and make some conditions worse ?
Funnily enough my condition cleared up dramatically when I had chemo and has never been as bad as it used to be!
