I was diagnosed in February after my mammogram that I had breast cancer. 7 biopsies were taken and after 3 weeks got the results back confirming that I had stage 1 and that a lumpectomy would be done along with a sentinel node biopsy. I eventually had the Lumpectomy operation on the 22nd April and went back to see the consultant on 18th May who confirmed that it was stage 1 and that they had got it all and that the sentinel node was clear. He informed that I would be having radiotherapy and I was put on Letrozole. Apparently a referral to an Oncologist was done on the 18th May. It is now coming up to 5 weeks and I have heard nothing about the referral. Has anyone else had to wait so long to see an Oncologist and how soon did radiotherapy start after a Lumpectomy. Would appreciate any thoughts anyone has.
Hi Pearl,
that’s reassuring that it has been confirmed Stage 1. Oncologist contacted me very quickly because I had chemo, so I can’t advise otherwise, but with respect to radiotherapy, I think (could be wrong) that you can need to wait 8-9 weeks for that to start post-operation. That was true for me - I had a mastectomy - but I believe that they need to wait for the surgery site to fully heal, even if lumpectomy.
take care now x
Hi Pearl. I was diagnosed as having stage 2 invasive ductal cancer on March 20th. On 19th April I had a lumpectomy and 8 lymph nodes removed. I saw surgeon on 19th May who said it was at least a 4 week wait to see oncologist. I chased the appointment after 3 weeks as it was suggested I did. Next day secretary offered me an appointment for 10th June which I was unable to make. I had an appointment with oncologist but I have covid now. I will all being well see oncologist. The waiting to see specialist is hard. As I believe it's at least 2 weeks before you start radiotherapy. I hope this is of some help. Dont be afraid to chase oncologist appointment through breast care nurses. It seems secretary to specialist I'm seeing was on holiday. Hence the delay I dont know which hormone blocking medication I will be taking yet. Good luck with everything. x
Hi Devon
Thanks for your reply. I did ring the breast care nurses on 13th June who informed me that they had requested an Oncology appointment on the 18th May. Since being diagnosed it is now coming up to 6 months and it just seems that I am forever just waiting weeks on end for the next step, diagnosis to operation was 3 months. Maybe I am over thinking too much as I live on my own. I will get back in touch with the breast care nurses and see if they can chase appointment up. Hope you recover ok from Covid and good luck with everything yourself. x
