Invasive ductal carcinoma - metastatic

Hi!  I’m new here, just diagnosed days ago and feeling quite confused.  My consultant at the breast screening centre didn’t say what stage I was (and I was too shocked to ask!) but did say the tumour was 3x2cm (measured on an ultrasound machine),   and ‘Equivocal’ results from the lymph node biopsy as the needle broke during the biopsy and not enough material was collected for a result.  Have now seen my oncologist who measured my tumour externally  - with a tape measure! - and said I’m stage 4 metastatic.  I’ve had no scans or blood tests to base the metastatic opinion on.  Anyway, long and short is that I’ll be having TCHP chemo, then a lumpectomy and (according to consultant) one or two lymph nodes removed. Then according to oncologist, three years (!) of chemo and radiation.  Is anyone else going through similar?   I’m a bit scared of being sick on chemo, I’ve booked an appointment to get a wig, I’m trying to be positive here but I’m wondering if the oncologist was really trying to tell me it’s spread everywhere and three years is all I’ve got to look forward to! I’m seeing the oncologist on Friday to sign consent forms…..

  • This diagnoses sounds really bizarre and I wonder if they mean metastatic to your lymph nodes only? I would call your breat care nurse immediately and ask for clarification. If you’ve not had a CT scan kr anything like that then they can’t tell if it’s stage 4?

    best of luck x

  • Thank you, you replied really quickly!   Yes, I’m thinking I need to phone my breast care nurse too.  Will update later.

  • I agree this sounds very strange based on my experiences. I know it sounds odd but could you have confused metaplastic (a type of BC) with metastatic? It’s a mistake that’s been made before on here hence why I mention it but either which way definitely contact the breast care nurse for clarification of what’s been diagnosed because it sounds very confused. Really sorry you’ve not only had this rubbish diagnosis but that it’s been so unclear too, really tough x

  • Thanks for your reply!  You’re right, it could well be.  Although he did go on to say the cancer cells could be too small to pick up on a scan.  I’ll call my breast care nurse tomorrow!
