Going beyond denial

Hi everyone

I've been reading through some of your stories and am so impressed at both the strength and vulnerability of the women here.

Despite having been diagnosed on March 18 and having had a lumpectomy and lymph biopsy in April I think I've somehow managed to remain in denial about having breast cancer.

My doctors said it was 'unlikely' that I would need chemo so I had thought I would get away with a few weeks of radiotherapy and then sail off back into normal life and do my best to forget all about it. So it was a bit of a bombshell to be told last week that my oncotype test score came back 'quite high' (I haven't been brave enough to ask what the score was) and I need 8 cycles/6 months of chemo. Feeling very bummed out and a bit paralysed in terms of knowing how to prepare myself and my 13 yo daughter (I am a lone parent) for this journey.

Even now I think I'm still a bit in denial but as chemo is likely to start in the next couple of weeks I think I need to own it a bit more and accept that yes, I really do have breast cancer. Hopefully joining this forum is a step on the way to acceptance.

Hope all of you here are able to do whatever makes you feel the best you can today, whichever stage of this rollercoaster you are on.

  • Hi. I'm due my 5th chemo cycle next Wednesday. Had lumpectomy and sentinel lymph node removal in Jan. Struggling with hair loss, fatigue, had horrid chest infection over last few weeks too! I had Invasive Ductal Carcinoma 19mm. Clear Margins, nothing in lymph nodes. Feel lucky. Unfortunately it was EO8 and HER2+, which means chemo  radiotherapy, Herceptin injections and Anastrazole tablets for many years. Not been too bad on FEC, had 1st Docetaxal plus Herceptin jab 3 weeks ago. Also have 7 days of Filgastrim injections at home after each cycle. Just keep thinking, only 2 more to get through now. Seems such a lot of treatment when I'm cancer free; all to prevent recurrence. Jo x I don't think a day goes by where I don't dwell on 'it'. Got first counselling session booked for week after next.

  • Pretty similar scenario to mine Jo - well done for getting through all that. I need to learn more of the lingo to negotiate this world!
