New diognoses

Hello,

I'm looking for a little clarification as it's Bank Holiday the hospital support number is closed.. Just a few questions or any advice if anyone been through similar. We got the news a few days ago and it all seems a blur.

Mum was diognoses with breast cancer she had no lump it was calsification found on routine mammogram it's a 11mm tumor they say its early..

However in her next breath she said there is a 45 mm area around it that they would all be surprised is benign. So more biopsy are needed and something about a dye too.. So is it still early at that size?

I asked about grade she said two but don't get that confused with stage two.. So again I'm not sure if this sounds positive or negative..???

We spoke about lumpectomy but they are pushing more info on mastectomy. I feel like they already know like they did the week b4 we got results they practically told us...

I asked about treatment after she said probably a tablet after mastectomy..

Mum said book the op and get the mastectomy but they said they won't until they see the further biopsy. I'm scared this is delaying.. Does private get you results faster than two weeks??

I'm so worried cuz we are just as in the dark as a week ago..

Has anyone expriced similar?? If so what happens I know each person is different but a little more insight would be so helpful.

Thank you xx

  • I expect they need all the.biopsy reports before they can offer a definite plan. Grade 2 means medium in a 1 to 3 scale of how fast it grows. But they don't grow that fast that a week or two will make a difference.  I doubt that you would get much better privately as cancer is treated quickly on.the NHS and you have the wider team like the breast care nurses.

I know its hard to wait but I expect there will be a treatment plan soon

    1. Best of luck xx
  • Hi

This seems very similar to my recent diagnosis.

I was called back after a routine mammogram as they had spotted an area of calcification which needed further examination. Unfortunately, when I went back they also saw a small lump which they biopsied there and then. I then had to go back the following day to have the area of calcification biopsied as they suspected it was DCIS. A week later I got the news that the lump was a 9mm grade 3 cancer and the area of calcification was DCIS, which I think measured 36mm.

As the lump and DCIS were close together they were able to offer me a lumpectomy but if the areas had been too far apart or too big I would have had to have a mastectomy.

The dye that you mention might relate to the radioactive dye that is injected into your breast either on the day or the day before the lumpectomy/mastectomy to see which of your lymph nodes need removing for testing. In my case the dye flowed into 2 sentinel lymph nodes which were both removed.

They won't want to book your mum in for surgery until they have the results of the second biopsy as, until they do, they won't have all the information to be able to make a decision on the best treatment plan for your mum. Everyone's treatment plans are tailored so it's important that they know what they're dealing with before they make a decision.

I don't know if you went privately if you would have the results any quicker but in my experience the NHS don't hang around when there's a cancer diagnosis. To give you an idea of my timeline. It was 10 days after my mammogram that I had the first biopsy, the following day I had the second, a week later I was given the news I had cancer and a surgery date was booked for me there and then for just over 3 weeks later.
