Hiya. I am knew to this group. I had a lumpectomy and lymph nodes removal on Friday 13 May. I have been advised that I can't use shower gel and deodorant for at least 6 to 8 weeks. The wounds are both nicely closed and dry. Not being able to shower properly and use deodorant is bringing me down. Does anybody have experience of similar advice and if so what did you use? Sorry it is a very basic question but having looked around on the web I can't find any advice.

  • Hello. I know every hospital has its own rules so this is what I did but 2 days after surgery I showered and have showered every day. I used shower gel but very plain, unscented one. I have changed my deodorant to a natural one ie no aluminium. I like faith in nature and have been using that too. Like a few others, I did notice an odour post surgery not necessarily BO but my armpit felt sticky. My scars were just below my armpit one under the other - one is for lump and the other was for the sentinel node removal. As long as you don't saturate your wounds, I was advised to let shower spray on back and not soak wounds, then I think a shower and deo is up to you.

  • Hi. I wasn't told not to use deodorant after my lumpectomy or mastectomy.  I used to have a shallow bath with my drain hanging over the side. I used a flannel and sensitive soap carefully avoiding my dressing.  Once the drain was out I was able to have a shower with a waterproof dressing on. Hope that helps.

  • Hi. I had same surgery as you on the 20th April. The advice was to have a shallow bath or a shower But not to use deoderant. I am very lucky in that I heal well. Within the 1st week I showered everyday and once it was completely healed I used roll on deoderant. I felt my underarm scar was sweaty but just made sure I thoroughly tried the skin and have had no problems

  • I was told to keep my wound dry fora week.  I used a soft microfibre face cloth to wipe around wound while sitting in bath.  My hairdresser washed my hair for me which made me feel so much fresher.  I rarely use shower gel as it irritates my skin.  I use this soap Dr Bronner's 946 ml Organic Lavender Castile Liquid Soap as it's so gentle.  Just a little  bit needed in bowel of water .  Deodorant I just didn't use on one side throughout radio therapy.  I found a small facecloth wet in bag freshened me up when needed but surprisingly my body adjusted quickly.
