Hello
I was wondering if anybody could tell me what to expect please.
I have recently had a mammogram (and an ultrasound on just my left breast) and have been called back for a biopsy with the description on the letter saying, Upright Stereo Mammogram and Core Bx Lt.
There wasn't any further information enclosed in the envelope with the details of my appointment. I did telephone the hospital and they told me I would be given a local anaesthetic which I was pleased to hear and they said it's my choice if I also wish to take some ibuprofen beforehand too which I think I will.
If anybody could give me further information I would be very grateful but from what I understand they have some concerns regarding my left breast. The description on the report I have received following my mammogram and ultrasound says, 'Very dense breast tissue and small cysts. Scattered calcifications in upper left breast. Old mammograms to be imported and reviewed for comparison. Patient aware that she might be recalled for a biopsy depending on previous mammogram review outcome.'
Of course I do hope the results of the biopsy are good news but I think it would be helpful to receive a copy of the biopsy report. I presume I am entitled to receive a copy of the biopsy report?
Thank you for any help and advice.
Hi Sarah16
An 'Upright Stereo Mammogram' sounds like what I had a couple of months ago. Like you I was recalled after a routine mammogram as they said I had an area of calcification which they wanted to look at in more detail.
If it is the same as when I had my biopsy done you sit in a chair which they position in front of a machine that looks very similar to a mammogram. The radiographer then moves your breast into position so that the doctor can see, through a magnifier, the area that they want to biopsy. Local anaesthetic is then injected into the area where they are going to take the biopsy from. The anaesthetic stung slightly and I was told to tell them if I could still feel the procedure as they could inject more if necessary. I couldn't feel a thing and the wound area was so small that only a small dressing was needed. I didn't need any other form of pain relief after the procedure.
An appointment was then made for me to see the consultant the following week when I was given the results. I didn't asked for a copy of the biopsy report so don't know if they would give you one if you asked.
I hope everything goes well.

Thank you, that's all really helpful information x
I had same experience as latchbrook except they biopsied 2 areas of calcifications on top of left breast. I was lucky and had 3 radiographers in with me so two positioned and operated machine and the third, a trainee I think, just talked to me. They gave me two locals and I felt nothing after first local. I didn't need any painkillers afterwards and Judy had a slightly bruised area. I had results a week later. One area benign and one intermediate DCIS. Click on my name to see treatment etc. I still have breast calcifications 7 years on that they monitor for stability m. I'm a G cup so they get in the way a bit and knocks can cause the calcifications .
I hope your all keeping well, I've just finished my treatment for Breast Cancer DCIS Grade 3. Now sister in law got a recall to the clinic..they found 2 lumps and they biopsies them today she gets her results next week.. I got my mammogram scan and biosy and told it was 98% a Cancer all at the one appointment and that the biopsy would confirm it. She wasn't told anything so I'm praying she gets good news..xx
