Hi. I've been referred to see an oncoplasty surgeon, next Tuesday. Can anyone tell me, what they do? I had a scan recently, for a suspected clot in my lung and something showed up in my right breast, which I had a lumpectomy and radiotherapy treatment for, last October/November.

Just wondering why I'm seeing this person..

Thanks in advance lovely people. Heart eyes

  • Hi

The surgeon that did my WLE for my IDC was an oncoplastic surgeon and also was the one that gave me my prescription for anastrozole ahead of my radiotherapy as she was part of the breast cancer team

My understanding is that they are a combination of general surgeon and plastic surgeon so for breast cancer as well as removing breast cancer via surgery they would also deal with reconstructions etc

I think you need to explicitly ask what the reason for appointment is  so you are informed. Is there a contact you can ring ?

    Best wishes

Hi. There isn't a number to ring, just the booking department. I had my surgery and radiotherapy the end of last year and a recent scan, for a suspected blood clot, just happened to show changes on the same breast. I thought I might just see a nurse specialist or similar. Perhaps I'm worrying about nothing..thanks for your reply. Blush

  • In some NHS trusts the protocol is to call the patient back in some months after surgery, sometimes a year, for a final check up of how it has all healed. If at that point all looks fine, the surgeon then discharges that patient completely. From the time frames you are giving, this could well be it.

Hi, thanks for your reply. My situation is just a coincidence. I had a ct scan to check for a blood clot on the lung and the doctor said something showed up on my right breast. I'm hoping it's nothing sinister, but can't help but worry.

  • Yeah. If they are not asking for a biopsy then I wonder if they are thinking of a benign finding, but you need confirmation either way of what exactly they meant. If the Tuesday appointment is indeed about the surgery you've had, you can still ask about the recent scan, see if the surgeon can shed more light on that.
