Hi all. I had a lumpectomy and reduction on 13th April and my recovery has been very slow. My nipples were moved for over 10cm and the right side where the cancer was has become infected. I now have nipple and alveoli necrosis. Has anyone been through this? My wound is very smelly and I'm having my dressings changed every 2 days. I have asked my consultant to give me a mastectomy to which she has refused. I am worried that the necrosis is going to delay my chemo. Has anyone got any advise please? I'm depressed and desperate. Thanks xx
Hi Moo
Welcome to the forum and sorry to hear that you have been diagnosed with breast cancer. While I haven’t been through what you are going through I thought I’d welcome you to the forum as you haven’t had any replies yet. Hopefully someone who has the experience you are looking for will be along soon.
Would you consider ringing the Macmillan helpline about how you are feeling at the moment. The number is 0808 808 00 O0. The line is open 7 days a week from 8 am to 8 pm. Has your consultant given you a good reason why she has refused to give you a mastectomy?
Hope things improve for you soon.
Best wishes

Hi Moo, so sorry to hear what you are going through. Sorry I'm not able to offer any insights or advice, however the Macmillan helpline has an option for speaking to someone from the medical team about treatment and they may be able to help.
Sending hugs Xx
Hi thank you for your reply. I am going to give the advice line tomorrow. Thanks again xx
Hi Moo,
I have been diagnosed with same type of breast cancer unfortunately twice
The first time round I had lumpectomy and breast reduction
The second time round I have had a mastectomy and breast reconstruction on one side
Although my wounds healed well I did suffer from fat necrosis and also cording under my arm pit.
I gently massaged the areas several times a day which seemed to ease the cording and the necrosis
I'm sure you are in good hands with your consultant
Wishing you all the best x
hi there
Sorry to hear of your issues regarding your would.
I had lumpectomy back in Feb - 3 days after it was clear i had sepsis and spend a week in hospital.
SInce then like you i have had necrosis, with discharge etc - gross but its all part of its own healing process. Plus recurrent infection that comes and goes and forces me to have antibiotics.
ONLY now all these weeks later after my op is it finally starting to heal. At last!
I started chemo 4 weeks ago very end of March. So far ive had 3 (had to miss one due to unhappy liver).
They WiLL start your treatment at the right time - dont worry about it, they have a window to work with and they will.
My treatment started before it had healed and it DID heal afterwards - even on chemo.
If your surgeon thinks you dont need a mastectomy then you dont - that can have a lot more problems and a lot more healing.
You are headed in the right direction, you will get your chemo etc ... be good to yourself, eat well, moisturise your skin etc, lots of water.
I wish you the very best - you'll get there ------- you'll smash this. xxx
