Hi

just another sleepless night so thought I'd join!

1 week today since lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy

feeling sore , tired , emotional, like I should be starting to feel better and I don't.....

reading too much that makes me think I should be literally back at work in a week or so - it's definitely not looking that way at the moment..

hoping to get some support from people who know x

  • Morning, although we are all going through similar things we all react and need time to heal in our own ways.  What one person is able to do doesn’t mean someone else can do. This is your individual journey, take your time, rest up when you can. Only you will know when the time is ready to return back to work etc. Be kind to yourself. X

  • I’m with you, I’ve had a reconstruction 5 days ago and sore is not quite what I would be saying in the small hours of the morning. There are so many different types of breast cancer and the treatments for them it’s no wonder some of us feel we are not progressing as quick as some other people. And don’t forget what has been said by others, that we all heal in different ways and time’s

Thank you ! It does seem like when reading up there's a one size fits all approach when actually we are all totally different!

  • Hi , lovely replies already,  definitely it’s an individual thing. Each person’s op is unique to them, and depends on the depth, size and position of the lump. So one scar may be an inch long while another is many inches. There really is no rule that covers us all re when to return to work, and the other factor is the job itself.
In my case, I thought I’d be back after a couple of weeks but ended up off for 4 months! This was a complete shock to me but my school were very supportive (I was a special needs teacher) as it was a very physical job. My wound was far bigger than I’d imagined (one incision to access the lump and the nodes), and I just wasn’t ready to return until after radiotherapy. Even then I did a phased return.
So please take the time you need. It may not be nearly as long as I had, but only you will know if you’re ready.
Some people have worked throughout treatment and indeed some have said it kept them sane, but don’t feel that there’s any standard rule. Allow yourself to listen to your body and do what’s right for you. I hope you have a supportive employer, I know I was lucky with mine.
    Love and hugs, HFxx

    Thank you!

My employer is really supportive and no pressure from them at all just me beating myself up as usual!

it's really good to hear from you all as I probably know these things but it's helpful to hear from others in the same situation x

    1. I had same op in October then back in 2 weeks later for another to remove more cells when I was just starting to feel a little better after 1st one..I wouldn't of been fit for work either, but my Dr had me signed off so I didn't have that worry about work. It took a couple of months for me to feel like I was really on the mend, as stretching to wash hair was sore and reaching for things, I also have some nerve damage where my thumb and finger start moving on their own, it has eased off.. make sure to do the exercises they give you too..and if you can take a couple of weeks off  with ssp then do so as your body needs to recover..xx

I've seen GP today and been signed off until 2may  so at least I don't have to worry about work for now!

  • That’s good glad you can concentrate on getting better. My consultant told me I had to stay off work  for 3 months until after my lumpectomy and radiotherapy

best wishes, take care and relax x
