Just diagnosed

Hi, I got a cancer diagnosis on Thursday and I’m still processing the shock. I’ve had multiple cysts over the years. GP, hospital, Us, drain the cyst, mammogram and discharge has become quite routine. So I’m a bit shell shocked that this hasn’t gone the same way.

I have an MRI next week and possibly another biopsy before I know what the plan will be - although it seems pretty certain I’ll be having some form of surgery and radiotherapy.

what’s worrying me most tonight is that I’m allergic to contrast dye. The contrast dye seems to be a vital part of the process to investigate the lymph nodes.

Does anyone know what they can do to get round this?

Thank you

  • Hi Runner_5

Welcome to the forum and sorry to hear that you have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Your breast surgeon or your oncologist if you have one should give you a prescription for steroids to take a day or two before your MRI.

Wishing you the best of luck with your MRI next week and with whatever treatment you are given.

    Best wishes

Hi I was diagnosed 28 December with breast cancer,my husband paid for me to have a ct and mri scans as a long wait with hospital, luckily it has not spread to other organs, booked in for the 14 February but covid test came back positive,so now are booked in for 17 March, got to have another covid test and pre op,so hopefully all will go well,

If you mean during the scan, then they will have to do it without the contrast, and they will take that into account when they look and interpret the images.

If you mean in general, then during surgery they will remove lymph nodes and send them to pathology to say if there is any cancer in them.

  • Hi Runner_5,  sorry to hear about your diagnosis and welcome to the forum.  Like you am allergic (mildly) to contrast dye.  Had a lumpectomy a few weeks ago and my surgeon told me that she wasn't going to use the blue dye to identify my sentinel lymph nodes and used something else, so there is an alternative.   Just make sure that your surgeon and anyone doing a CT or MRI knows about your allergy.  Hope that helps x

  • Hi, pretty sure they used something different for me during surgery. It's hard to remember but was it iron filings instead of contrast dye?  As others have said, make sure your medical team know this each time you go for tests or treatment.  Good luck
