Hi. I was diagnosed with Breast cancer on Friday 13th August (great day huh)  after my first routine mammogram. I had no lumps whatsoever but they found I had a 1.5cm cancer in the left breast and DCIS in the right. I had 2 wire guided lumpectomies in Sept and they also removed 2 lymph nodes on  the left. The left side was now clear but they didn't get a clear margin on the right. They also found a 1.8mm cancerous tumour in the removed tissue. I then had another operation in November and then finally reconstruction just before Christmas. I have been taking Tamoxifen for a month now which is making me feel nauseous and also extremely tired. I have just had my third radiotherapy session today - 7 more to go. Things have happened so quickly I haven't really had time to process things - its like I have been on a roller coaster and not been able to get off......

  • Hello, I am new here.   am 77years old and was diagnosed with breast cancer and lymph node cancer in December.   In January I had right breast mastectomy and removal of 15 lymph nodes.   Home the morning after surgery.   From the start I have had problem with fluid gathering and have had it drained 4 times by breast care nurses.   Last week when I attended for what would have been my 5th draining of fluid, I was seen instead by surgeon who performed my operation.   his strong advice was that unless the fluid build up was giving me pain I should stop the drainage because of the danger of infection each time.   I took his advice last Wednesday and by Monday this week my GP confirmed that my wound was infected - very hard to the touch, very hot and discolouration travelling quite a distance around the wound site.   my GP drew a line around the infected area and prescribed antibiotics.   She advised me to keep a careful watch to make sure the infection did not go beyond the line she had drawn.   Fortunately the infection site is still contained with her lines and the swelling is beginning to soften a little.    Also at the weekend, 15 days after starting Letrozole I suddenly developed what I can only describe as a raging urinary tract infection with blood and pain like I had never experienced before .  so now I am on two different antibiotics, one for wound infection and the other for urinary tract infection and need to take these for a week.   Needless to say I have been feeling extremely unwell this past week.    It makes me wonder whether there could or should have been some intervention recently, based on my age, the trauma of surgery and the fact that I needed regular wound drainage.    Thank goodness for Macmillan as I don't know anyone who has had breast cancer surgery and have not been well enough to attend a Maggie's centre.   Just wondering if my experiences ring a bell with any others in the same situation as me.   for the first few weeks after my surgery I felt I was doing so well and then within a few days I got more ill than I can ever remember in my 77 years.   thank you if you have managed to read my long story.
