Hi everyone, I had a mastectomy for DCIS 5 weeks ago. Got the all clear so I’m very lucky but I’m struggling with recovery because I still have swelling the size of the other breast and I’m also incredibly low in energy. Can anyone advise me on whether this is all normal and how long it will take for full recovery? Best wishes to all fellow sufferers

Hi. I had a mastectomy four weeks ago and have had the same thing.  Looked like I still had a breast..albeit no nipple!  It was fluid built up and I have had to have it drained twice now.  Could it be that?

  • Hi Maggie welcome to the forum and I am so sorry to hear about how you are feeling.

Thats  a huge op you have had and I imagine that there have been many sleepless nights before during and after and it all catches up with us at some point. I'm wondering if that swelling  might be a big seroma, (which is a collection of blood under the skin), by the sounds of things and I'm wondering if someone doesn't need to have a look at that for you. I don''t think its urgent as such, but I do feel that someone should see this and check what that swelling is as it can be drained if needed. I'm assuming  also with such a swelling that your sleep is disturbed and also you not feeling very comfortable at all.

Im sure soem of the otger lovely folks on her who will be more knowledgable about your type of surgery will be along soon to offer some words of advice and help as well. But please do get someone to look at that for you on Monday.

Meantime I am  sending some huge big,but gentle, hugs your way for now. xxxx

Thank you for this - yes, I'm exactly the same. It's like an extra breast but very wobbly! I wonder if I should contact the breast care nurse and ask about having it drained again?

Oh thank you for that Granny 59 - especially for the gentle hug, I needed that! You're right about the poor sleep quality of course (I can only lie on one side) and, like so many of us, I have lots of family issues going on as well so I guess I'm unrealistic in expecting to get my energy back quickly. How lovely to be part of a forum of people in similar situations

Hello again.  Yes I would do that.  I know it felt like a wobbly water cushion :)).  It’s all new to us, isn’t it, and I’m glad we can be here to share and support one another.  X

It looks as if I'm a week ahead of you (mine was 5 weeks ago) and in the last couple of days parts of it have hardened up, so it's less wobbly but more uncomfortable. I wonder if the same will happen to you. I'll definitely call them on Monday though and get some advice. Yes, it's great to share experience and not be alone with it. Take care x
