Hello, I was diagnosed with stage 1 cancer last October 2021, I have surgery and just finished my radiation treatment.
They say I have to go on hormone tablets for the next 5 years
I suffer with degenerate disc disease to my spine and had a disc discrepancy 2 years ago and a knee replacement last year.
I have been advised to take Letrozle by 1 consultant and tamoxifen by another.
they all seem to have to many side effects
my biggest worry are the effects on my bones and as vanity permits for a woman- putting on weight.
as I feel I have had enough with all of the treatments without more problems while feeling depressed.
would anyone have any advice or is anyone not taking the hormone tablets and how your all getting on
Many thanks
milo
Hi, I started Letrozole last September and so far I have not put on any weight. I am on bone infusions to help counteract the bone weakness and I haven't experienced any side effects so far luckily. Hope this helps
Thanks so much for taking the time to reply to me,making me feel less anxious

I was pre menopausal so take zoladex to suppress ovaries, which put me into a sudden menopause and exemestane which is an aramotase inhibiter (stops oestrogen anywhere else in your body) like letrozole.
I have zoledronic acid infusion every 6 months for 3 years which helps keep bones strong and also helps to stop breast cancer coming back in your bones.
I am a little stiff in the morning but it soon eases off. I obviously I have menopausal symptoms like hot flushes but I would have gone into menopause anyway at some point.
I was worried about taking them and the sudden menopause was quite intense but things have settled and all the side effects are manageable.
I haven't put on any weight and I've been on exemestane since April.
The hormone tablets are your best chance of the cancer not coming back so for me, it is worth it.
Thanks so much for getting back to the support & advice is great.

Like Irishgirl16 and Beatthebreast, I too am receiving Zoledronic acid infusions every 12 weeks (first one a week ago). I was prescribed Tamoxifen from diagnosis of IDC HER2 negative late September 2021 and took that up until 2 weeks ago. Scans showed secondaries on bone.
Since my infusion and as I was due to start Palbociclib on that same day, my oncologist switched me over from Tamoxifen to Letrozole the week before as it works better with the Palbociclib and Zoledronic acid, in my case.
Menopausal symptoms on either tablet (night sweats) are 3-4 times/night and only get 2-3 hot flushes during the day. Otherwise, managing okay.
Hope your treatment goes well.
When you're going through hell, don't stop!
Thanks so much for your reply, really appreciate all of the support & hope your going to get sorted very soon. Milo
